Please don't judge this based on simple images and small details, wait until it airs. Yes, there are people doing that (the ones butt-hurt over the Kalos League).

I kind of have a lot of back and forward going in my head about what this could lead to. First off just going to say that the idea of shifting to school life, plus details like how Ash is drawn and him and Pikachu making poses, makes me think they're trying to imitate Yokai Watch a bit, at least aesthetically. Just kind of hope it doesn't shift too far from feeling like Pokemon, though if the goal is graduation I kind of feel like this is probably a one time thing anyway. So another point, I actually kind of like seeing stuff like characters who are constantly on adventures being put in a more domestic environment like attending school. However, this will also come at the potential cost of not getting to explore Alola and this would require characters and new Pokemon to come to the school. Now there are some possibilities to get around that. For starters, the school arc might not even take up the entirety of this generation. We know only few details so far, and it is possible that we're just getting what is maybe the story of the first year. This could just be a season story arc like the Decalore Islands, only done at the beginning, and after that's wrapped up the remainder of Alola would be opened up. Another possibility is that traveling and school life could be done in shifts. Some time spent in school, then Ash gets some off time and goes off to another island, presumably to do part of the Island Challenge, and then back in time for the next section of school. I'm kind of hoping the Island Challenge isn't some mandatory thing. Like it's part of graduation. It kind of makes it seem less of a challenge and accomplishment from what Ash has done before, especially coming down from just getting to the final 2 in the Kalos League. However it could still work if the school's only interested in evaluating how you battle against the kahuna in the Grand Trials, but don't actually expect you to beat them. Beating one is actually a high accomplishment, and beating them all would essentially be the equivalent of graduating with highest honors. I can't find a source on this so it could very well be false, but I remember hearing somewhere that Agatha of the Kanto Elite 4 would be in the games as a kahuna, so a win against her would definitely be a major accomplishment. I've heard some people mumbling about putting Ash in school will have him know nothing in the start like is BW. I'm hoping it's not the case, but I'd be fine with them showing that he does know a lot after all his travels, he just has trouble applying his experience in a school environment like doing homework and tests and stuff, and have him be familiar with all the stuff we the audience already knows but he can still be clueless on all the new things Alola is going to be introducing. That would be the perfect way of handling him as an audience surrogate in my opinion. I am rather interested in who'll make up the remaining roster of the cast. Mallow seems like she'll be the main female companion, but no idea on who the male companion will be. Maybe Sophocles? Maybe instead of two boys, one girl, they'll try two girls, one boy for a change (excluding that period where Clemont left Ash, Serena, and Bonnie to prepare for his and Ash's gym battle) and have Lillie be the third member of the twerps? Or another two boys, two girls like Kalos with all three of them hanging out with Ash often. I also wonder if Ash will be getting a rival for this region too considering the different premise. Finally, advertising lots of new characters makes me feel like the cast will be big enough and that they aren't hiding any returning characters. As an amour shipper, this makes me sad for no more Serena. Hopefully they'll at least let her visit for a while the same way they did for Misty, May, and Dawn before (and not skip over her like they did with Iris), and I can still hope for a special goodbye between the two at the end of XY. So overall, still not sure how to feel, but it's at least getting me thinking about it more. I just hope this doesn't end up backfiring and causing the ratings to drop further. The anime team's probably already getting enough heat from the whole backlash of the Kalos League ending.

New summary for XY&Z044 (remember, there's a two week break before this episode airs)-XY&Z042 screenshots: filb.de/anime/xyz/042 and XY&Z043 screenshots: filb.de/anime/xyz/043XY&Z044 preview video and Pocket Monsters Sun & Moon trailer: filb.de/news/pocket-monsters-xy-z-folge-42-und-43-2786Just like the Sun and Moon games, the anime will be going beyond our expectations by, not only having Satoshi go to school, but also having new animation. Best Wishes had a new eye-style, X & Y had a new hair-style for Satoshi, in Sun & Moon everything is drawn in a completely new way that you did not expect. I'm really looking forward to this, I love it when the Pokémon anime tries something new and I hope the SM anime will bring out the best of the fan-base again. I am serious, the XY(&Z) anime had the worst fan-following ever, I mainly blame all the Satosh-worshipping it had, so I hope SM won't make that same mistake.

The new art direction is reminding me of Mamoru Hosoda's work, particularly Digimon Adventure: Our War Game.
The cartoonier look may take a bit for me to fully get used to, specifically Ash's new design, but I like that the animation still looks good, potentially even more fluid than how XY is even outside of battles, so that will certainly help.

Copypasted from Bulbagarden, as I said it best there:
When the dub of this arc comes out, I'll be feeling the excitement everyone else here did. As it is now, it was okay-ish, but its problems held it back. Misused music for the nth time, and Yuki Kaji's absolutely pathetic performance as Squishy ruined the goodbye scene completely. Really finding it hard to believe it's the same man who gave a great performance as Clemont in last week's episode, let alone that it's the same man who won an award for his work in Attack on Titan. But then again, I've seen talented people reduce themselves to pitiful roles before (Dom DeLuise playing Christopher Columbus in The Magic Voyage's dreadful English dub comes to mind).
I know I'll sound a bit psychopathic for saying this, but I'm glad to see this show grow the nerve to kill a villain off.

Funny how the Megalith Zygarde was shown to us in the intro, long before this arc started.
I really liked the instrumental piano version of Puni-chan's Song, gotta get a full version of it.
I just loved everything about the appearance of the Kalos Gym Leaders and Champion Carnet.
Playing V (Volt) for nostalgia and then showing their names on-screen, just a really great scene.
TPCI better have had edited those names with the English ones and not removed them as the camera would be focusing on still shots for no reason.
By the way, we don't know if Fleur-de-lis is dead until the XY&Z series ends. So if there isn't a scene of the police arresting him, then yeah, he's dead.
And if Fleur-de-lis was killed off, he is not the first villain in the show to be so. That was Hunter J and her crew way back in the Diamond & Pearl series.

I'm kind of sad we;re going from the relatively detailed designs to... this?
I don't know, I guess we'll see once it airs. A lot of people seem to assume the anime got it's budget cut, but it subsisted on recycled animation, and regressed in detail for non essential episodes for awhile - producing a weekly anime series isn't easy after all.
That said, I was thinking about it today, and I really hope the "school" thing is mostly just starting the series off with another camp style arc, and isn't changing the format to a Slice-of-life style show, though, they've been having Ash bum about the countrysides cockfighting for over 900 episodes, so maybe they feel like they've run out of ideas - as we know, they were clearly a lot of recycled plots.
Also, does anyone know the status of Team Rocket in this new series?

I'm going to say it, they never should have Shounen-fied Saotshi. Why? Viewers clearly older than him becoming attracted to this 10 year old boy. Yeah, that's disturbing and the less we talk about the episode were he gets sick the better. Despite looking older Satoshi did not age, that's a fact. So yes, what I'm saying is I'm glad Satoshi once again looks like his age in Sun & Moon, if he's going to be forever 10 then he should stay looking 10. Also, does anyone know the status of Team Rocket in this new show? The SM poster shows the possibility of a Mimikyu joining their team, or it's just floating near them:

Oops, how'd I miss that?
I guess the most focus was on the Ash/Pikachu, so I didn't bother to look around.
BTW, they released two episode of that Generations anime on Youtube today. I know I'm one of the few Americans here, so I'm not sure of it's availability outside the US, but has anyone else seen it? Since it's set to go until December, I don't think there's any chance of it revealing anything new, like Mega Charizard X in Origins.

I'm sure people will get used to Satoshi's Sun & Moon design once the series airs, there are already some people who found it weird now getting used to it. The same thing happened with the new eye designs in Best Wishes. There were people who were shocked by them, but now everyone is used to the style. By the way, there could be some edits done to the SM animation when the episode(s) shown in the trailer air, the same was done with Best Wishes and XY. BTW, they released two episode of that Generations anime on Youtube today. I know I'm one of the few Americans here, so I'm not sure of it's availability outside the US, but has anyone else seen it? So... The Flare arc is over. It. Was. AWESOME. That's it, XY&Z is officially the greatest Pokémon series of all time. I'm still salty over XY&Z38, of course, but now I think I might have been a little too harsh on Alain. It's not Alain's fault he beat Ash even though realistically he should have lost. The writers are simply so dumb that they don't understand that winning one League tournament wouldn't make Ash a Pokémon Master, so they're the ones to blame for everything. I've always known that, of course, but I let my anger cloud my judgement. Alain is not the bad guy here (despite taking his sweet time to turn against Lysandre when Ash was captured). Okay, so I kinda got my wish and also didn't. Alain wasn't the one who finished Mega Gyarados off, but Ash-Greninja wasn't the one to save the day in the end either. But you know what? I'm okay with that. Teamwork and trust have always been major themes in Pokémon, and I really loved seeing EVERYONE play their part in destroying the Megalith. Ash and Alain would never have made it inside the Megalith if it weren't for the Gym Leaders' and the Champions' help, Alain wouldn't have reached Chespie so quickly without Ash's help and thanks to everyone fighting together, Z2 realized that humans are not worthless. (Then again, I'm quite sure Squishy and Z2 would have fused soon anyway because they still needed to protect Kalos. Nevertheless, it was a touching scene.) Team Rocket were great once again. I really love it when they side with the good guys during villain arcs. Apparently Gourgeist and Inkay were no match for Drapion and Weavile, but luckily they remembered that Wobbuffet is OP. Seriously, why don't they use Wobbuffet in like every battle? It would make their lives a lot easier. They also captured the entire battle and Perfect Zygarde on live camera. If nothing else, Giovanni will probably be impressed that they helped take down yet another rival Team. Perfect Zygarde was, well, perfect. The way it battled and obliterated the Megalith was beautiful. I don't think any legendary Pokémon besides Arceus would have withstood that Core Enforcer, so naturally Lysandre and his abomination didn't stand a chance. I feel bad for Rayquaza, though - its pet rock got smashed. Hopefully it won't seek revenge for that. The final goodbye scene was great. I was impressed at how mature Bonnie was about it. Some people say she's useless, but I've always liked her and she even got some character development of her own during the series. I will miss her just as much as Serena and Clemont, no doubt. P.S. Viola and Grant are totally banging. Nice, I always had a feeling they had something going on. .......... About Sun & Moon, it certainly doesn't look very pretty, but looks aren't everything. I just might give it a chance now that the Flare arc has redeemed the show so much. Granted, there's no way in hell that SM will ever top XY, but as long as it's not another BW, I'll probably like it. I'll get used to the new animation style if the writing is decent. If not, well... It's been fun 19 years. At least I'd quit the show knowing that Ash will finally get some real education. Possible, but I think I like your second theory more. Another possibility is that traveling and school life could be done in shifts. Some time spent in school, then Ash gets some off time and goes off to another island, presumably to do part of the Island Challenge, and then back in time for the next section of school. Or perhaps it's a school that has facilities on all four islands and students must study at them all during the school year. Not a bad theory. However, perhaps it's a very private school for extremely promising Trainers only, so beating the Kahunas could very well be a mandatory part of graduation. Very few might have ever accomplished that, so it could be a real challenge even for Ash. I think I'd prefer that. Also, if you're right about Agatha being one of the Kahunas, beating her would mean even more to Ash since he's already lost to her once. I've heard some people mumbling about putting Ash in school will have him know nothing in the start like i n BW. Oh, I doubt SM will make the same mistakes BW did. I have slightly more faith in the writers than that, even though those bastards never let Ash win a League. Yes, I agree with you, I would also be fine with Ash not knowing anything about Alola but having knowledge about everything from his past adventures. I just loved everything about the appearance of the Kalos Gym Leaders and Champion Carnet. Playing V (Volt) for nostalgia and then showing their names on-screen, just a really great scene. It was, wasn't it? Yet another thing that XY did right and BW didn't, which is especially hilarious because the Gym Leaders of Unova fought against Team Plasma and the Gym Leaders of Kalos didn't fight against Team Flare in the games. TPCI better have had edited those names with the English ones and not removed them as the camera would be focusing on still shots for no reason. I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you. By the way, we don't know if Fleur-de-lis is dead until the XY&Z series ends. So if there isn't a scene of the police arresting him, then yeah, he's dead. Dudette, he was vaporized. There was barely anything left of the Megalith after that final blow. There's no way Lysandre could have survived that, even despite the fact that humans are tougher than most comic book superheroes in Pokémon. And if Fleur-de-lis was killed off, he is not the first villain in the show to be so. That was Hunter J and her crew way back in the Diamond & Pearl series. Yep. I was wondering if we would ever get to see another villain death and I was not disappointed. Gekkouga possibly sacrificing its Satoshi-Gekkouga power in order to stop Xerosicy? Well it is a way to stop complainers of Gekkouga being left at Okido's lab. Oh please no. The Flare arc was so good that it nearly made up for the League fuck-up, they DO NOT need to do another massive fuck-up by taking away Greninja's special power. Never mind Serena not coming to Alola with Ash, this would be way worse! It would truly end XY&Z on the most sour note imaginable.
