As we know, May 13 is when America will start catching up to the rest of the English-speaking world when it comes to Pokemon's dub. Disney XD now has a commercial for it (this same commercial runs on TV).

Disney XD sure is going all in this week: showcasing the SM series, promoting Pokemon a lot through trailers and now fan art. If I lived in America, I would be so down for any of this! Let's see how this will go into next week as well.

I now realize the big problem I have with TPCI's handling of the dub Pokémon music starting from the XY series and that's... it is not anime.
What I mean is this is not kind of music handling that any Japanese animated shows have, however what does are most western cartoons.
So yeah, due to the handling of TPCI's music, the dub of Pokémon doesn't feel like an anime for me and that's why I am unable to watch it.
Except for those really rare occasions nowadays (it didn't used to be like that, e.g; Diamond and Pearl) were TPCI keeps the original music.
I don't hate western cartoons, I just don't like it when Japanese ones are treated like them, whether it's through music or just the dubbing.

I'm glad my post didn't offend you, I try my best to make a point on why I no longer like Pokémon dubbed without triggering those here who do like it. Now that I'm on the subject, I was shocked when I found out TPCI dubbed Togedemaru's voice as the Pika-mons have always kept their original voice. Of course I do know why they did it, because TPCI prefers the name saying of Pokémon to be more simple instead of mixed up like the Japanese one is. Still though, this feels like a sin to me... I mean TPCI didn't give Emolga a dub voice, even though you can clearly hear it say its Japanese name, Emonga. But guess what? I do not hate it. I find Togedemaru's English voice to be done well, in fact I noticed TPCI has improved a lot on the dub Pokémon voices. Especially when it comes to the animal-based ones; TPCI's now following what the original does and making them sound like the animal they're based on. What's funny is TPCI has been dubbing Pokémon voices which I find don't need to be so, but this doesn't bother me because most of them are good now. By the way, the Popplio and Lana drawing at 0:34 of the fanart video was done by me and a friend of mine. It's nice, I like it. Sorry, I'm not very good at complimenting people on their work. |

Well, well, Ash needed only one try to beat the first Kahuna. Looks like he held onto what Kalos taught him, battle-wise. Props to him.
I still want to know who Hala's English VA is, because he's very good. And as always, Sarah Natochenny hit it out of the park.
I can count the Japanese version's advantages over the dub on only one of my hands. One such advantage is the Z-Move text, which I guess I still have to concede to the JP version. However, I was very happy to see that the VS screen got a text edit instead of a text erasure. At last, TPCi takes the chance given to them by OLM (whom I still suspect preemptively makes these edits with the expectation that foreign versions will fill them with their language's equivalent terms). That was my favorite change made to the episode.
Even though I think Ed Goldfarb has never composed a single bad track for the show, I can admit that if I were to list the genres he does best, I'd have to put battle themes in last place. Again, they sound good; it's just that his other compositions are better. At least, this is what I thought throughout XY. Now, for SM, his battle music has really been stepped up. I mean, WOW, did this episode's battle music sound great! And I can admit, Akhil Gopal (the dub's music editor/assistant composer) made some great calls on which JP music to keep (check with NPT about which tracks were kept).
And now, at last, all English-speaking countries are all caught up when it comes to airing dub episodes.

First thing's first: man, Mimo (Kiawe's sister) sounds a lot like Chuckie Finster. Though the VA likely didn't intend it, that was one great Christine Cavanaugh impression.
Though I have no problem with SM's art style in general, Charizard looked so derpy (and no, Bronies do not own this word) in this episode.
All dub music (except for the title card)? All my yes. Major kudos to the Z-Move theme.
Overall, this was a fun filler.

I faintly remember seeing today's dub episode ("The Sun, the Scare, the Secret Lair!"; it premiered in the UK one day before the US premiere) in Japanese and being outraged that it used an inappropriately silly-sounding track over Team Rocket's almost-victory. But I vividly remember being excited upon seeing Meowth die, as I consider him to be the absolute worst thing about the JP version. Pity he survived...
Needless to say, this is another unpleasant JP version viewing memory erased by seeing it all become better in the dub. Acting was improved, writing was improved, music was improved. Oh, and the removal of Meowth's second death? Inconsequential. The episode survived without it. It was no better for it, nor was it worse for it.
Can't say I missed that whole shtick of James owning a Pokemon who's madly in love with him, but despite my ambivalence to it, I liked its return in the form of Mareanie.

Oh god, the way they edited that scene was awful, it just awkwardly cuts away from when Jessie and James were starting to turn their heads.
I know why TPCI cut it, but still, I rather they would have taken the risk. I mean there were no reports of any Japanese children getting nightmares.
But they believed Meowth's nearly dead body floating in the sea is too scary for American children, at least it's not suicide like someone on Youtube thinks.

Haven't had a chance to keep up with the dub recently, I don't have XD or a working computer since mines burnt in an apartment fire that destroyed half my stuff, about a month or so back.
But anyway, I look forward to getting back on the horse (and even guiding again, I kind of miss it)
