A Thunderstorm kicks up out of nowhere, as the rain-soaked twerps decide to duck into a big manison-esque house. Bonnie discovers that the door is open, and they decide to ask if they can freeload until the rain stops, they call out and no one answers, well if someone does live there, surely they won't mind, as the Twerps are just...
The Twerps continue to try to get a response from someone to no avail, so Bonnie has an idea. Why not stay here for awhile, the place gives them the creeps, but it's better than getting wet as Bonnie puts it.
Clemont figures that it feels creepy since it's dark as all hell, and shuffles over to a lighting fixture on a wall, and discovers that despite the house being in complete dis-repair, and looking like it's not been inhabited in years, the lights still work.
Who was paying the bill?
The lights come on and as Serena thanks Clemont he reveals... that HE didn't turn on any lights, and if he didn't... who did?
Clemont hurriedly tries to explain it away as the house having censors that detected their movement and came on automatically.
Well, this is a good enough explanation for Ash it seems, Serena on the other hand has another theory, that they're inside a haunted house, like something out of Super Mario World.
This freaks Ash out, despite having been in multiple ghost houses before.
Having been in multiple ghost houses before, however, Ash decides to place it safe and wait on the outside. However the door closes behind them, and locks. Clemont again blames this on the motion detectors.
Serena then freaks out Clemont by suggesting that not only is the house haunted, but it eats it's victims.
Clemont then gets political and explains that you shouldn't believe ANYTHING that can not be explained by science. He's not going to win the United States Presidency with that attitude. He gets the twerps to then look for an alternate exit.
Meanwhile, back in the rainstorm, our heroes, Team Rocket also spot the house and decide to duck in. Jesse also declares that if anyone is inside than she'll keep them company. My my Jesse, no need to sound so eager, at least tease them first. James also agrees to keep anyone inside company, in case they're not into Jesse's feminine wiles.
At some point between agreeing to keep whosoever in the house up, and pulling on a locked door Jesse decides that they should use this house as their Kalos Base. You see, since it's a pretty creepy shack, the riff-raff will stay away, because only a group of kids in a horrendously painted windowless van accompanied by a talking Dog would ever go into a randomly placed spooky house in the middle of the woods.
As Jesse scans around the door, a window opens, and she decides that it must be automatic, but much less erratically than Clemont. After the trio get inside the door closes, and the lights turn on, once again automatically, and James realizes that they're locked in.
In another part of the house, the twerps jump at the sound of thunder after seeing a painting. Well, all of them except Bonnie. Buncha punks. Serena then makes up another theory that maybe the lady on the painting is in fact a ghost, if you know what she means.
James tries to bash the window open, but instead it hits an invisible barrier in front of the window. The sound reverbs in the part of the house the twerps are in a much deeper tone, Clemont tries to explain it away as a grandfather clock, but Serena instead guesses that it must be someone trying to hit a stake to stop a Vampire.
That--that one doesn't even make sense, Serena!
Meanwhile, Team Rocket get spooked by the same portrait from earlier, as their screams spook the Twerps. Clemont tries desperately to wave it off as wind that sounds like whistling that sounds like people screaming, but Serena has absolutely no doubt in her mind that that was someone screaming and thus the house MUST be haunted.
Team Rocket have a similar idea and try to find an exit, fast. Until they're stopped by a mysterious figure with glowing eyes playing with a ball, it spots them and throws the ball at them, and they cheese it the fuck out of there.
As the twerps decide to make their own way to an exit the mysterious thing floats up ahead, it waves then floats away, the twerps are creeped out, except Bonnie who chases after it, forcing the rest of the twerps to chase after her. She chases it round a few corners, and as the rest of the twerps catch up to where she ran... there's no one in sight, nothing but a dead end.
A DEAD END!
Team Rocket in the bedroom hear the Twerps calling out, and assume it's whatever's haunting the house. The twerps continue on, until Clemont hears the secret word and SCREAMS REAL LOUD.
He's figured it out, whatever's doing this must be either a Psychic or Ghost-type Pokémon. While he's figured out it must be a Pokémon, and that thing they saw must be the culprit, he still has no idea WHY it doesn't want them to leave, though.
Bonnie meanwhile tries to start a conversation with the "ghost", and it instead throws it's ball-thing at Bonnie... and it's just a regular ball. It makes Bonnie throw it back, until she catches on that it wants to play catch with her. Dedenne gets excited and has it throw it's ball at it, but Dedenne's not used to heavy lifting... or lifting of any kind and falls clean off of Bonnie's head. Bonnie dives to catch it, but it stops them both from falling with it's Psychic powers. Bonnie then figures that it must be what locked the doors and turned on all the lights, as it purrs loudly in the affirmative.
She asks it why it refused to let them go, and then leads her to a playroom full of toys apparently waiting for someone to play with, by locking them inside of a house.
Meanwhile the rest of the twerps hear some bizarre noise, and assume somehow it's Bonnie, they run into a room and see three cloaked figures standing in a window. Who could they be?
"Prepare for trouble, such a familiar sound"
"And make it double, like Pikachu's around"
"To protect the world from fear and loathing"
"To unite all people in creepy clothing"
"To denounce the evils of blood curdling screams"
"To extend our reach til we burst at the seams"
Suddenly a thunderclap scares them as they hug each other out of fear
"SCARED JESSE"
"JITTERY JAMES"
"T-team Rocket blasts off in a terror filled blitz"
"OI!" interrupts Meowth
"I'D RATHER BE FIGHTING BECAUSE I'M SCARED OUT OF MY WITS!"
"THIS IS THE PITS!" concludes Meowth
Jesse takes notice of the twerps, and the Twerps in turn blame Team Rocket for being behind all the weird shit that's been happening, as Serena notes they're dressed like ghosts. Meowth corrects them, they're not dressed like ghosts, they just snatched a couple of table cloths because they were cold and wet.
Despite assuring the Twerps they've really done nothing, Clemont demands they give back Bonnie, and they apparently have no idea what a "Bonnie" is.
Then suddenly a loud BUMP!
Team Rocket cheese it the fuck out of their, as we see apparently Bonnie knocked over the Wooden Ponyta the Pokémon were riding. The Psychic-type rights the Ponyta as Dedenne points out it's pendant, apparently asking what it is. It points them to the portrait where the woman in it is wearing the exact same pendant.
She asks it why it's has the same pendant, and it tries it explain in it's garbled language, but unfortunately Bonnie can't understand it, meanwhile the twerps happen to finally catch up with her and Clemont tells her she must never run off again. She apologizes but explains that she was just playing with the Pokémon. "Espurr, the Restraint Pokémon, Espurr's Psychic energy can travel hundreds of feet blasting everything around it".
Espurr continues trying to explain it's connection with the woman in the picture and the pendant but Bonnie still can't understand it. Team Rocket shows back up and realize that neither of them will make it out unless they can figure out what Espurr wants, fortunately for them they have someone on hand who can translate Pokémon speak.
According to Meowth, Espurr wants to return the pendant to the woman in the painting. We're treated to a flashback as we see the lady feeding it, giving it the ball it was playing with earlier, and playing in the playroom where she apparently used to play with her grand kids.
Later on she's seen breathing heavily, before taking a seat on the steps. She then puts her pendant on Espurr and tells it that it was a gift from her husband, and if it likes it it can keep it for awhile. Apparently it was a wild Espurr and came and went as it pleased. Then one day it shows back up to return her pendant, and even brings her a tiny flower, but she was nowhere to be found.
The Twerps have no idea where she could be, obviously, but Clemont decides they could find out. Before they discuss further Team Rocket then decide that the quickest way they can get out of the mansion would be to catch Espurr. Jesse and James send out Pumbkaboo and Inkay respectively, and Jesse has Pumbkaboo use Leech Seed to restrain the Restraint Pokémon, and Inkay blasts them with Psychic, but Espurr blocks with Protect.
Espurr then breaks out of Leech Seed and sends Team Rockets blasting off by itself. Team Rocket are happier to finally be free from the mansion than they are mad about missing out on Espurr.
The twerps congratulate Espurr on how powerful it is as a car pulls up in front of the mansion. Espurr resumes asking for help in finding the lady in the picture, as the woman driving the car walks into the mansion. While the Twerps try to figure out details about the woman another voice asks if they're talking about "Grandma Lacy".
That's the lady in the painting and the woman before the Twerps is her Granddaughter, Elise. The twerps explain the situation and how Espurr is a friend of her grandmother, and apologize for breaking into the house. Ash gets to the point and asks where Lacy is now, and Elise explains that unfortunately she passed away.
Espurr is heart broken, and floats Elise her grandmother's pendant, explaining how it meant to return it to her. Elise meant to have the house torn down, but after meeting them (and especially Espurr) decides to instead renovate the house and move in, and offers to let Espurr keep coming back to play.
Elise then has an idea and asks if Espurr would like to go to Lacy's grave so it can tell her how it feels and say good-bye, and it happily agrees to escort her to say it's final goodbye to it's friend.
Speaking of good-bye, the Twerps and Elise and Espurr say their goodbyes, Elise promising she'll take good care of Espurr and she thinks they'll become real good friends.
As they drive to the cemetery, Elise decides that Espurr should keep the pendant, as it' probably what Grandma Lacy would want.
D'awww.
