899: Shishiko and Kaenjishi! A Fiery Departure
892: A Fiery Rite of Passage!
Snowbelle City is still a ways away, and the twerps are still making that long trip there. But the journey has been a long one thus far, and it’s beginning to catch up to Clemont. And just as Bonnie gets on her big brother’s case for falling behind, they all hear a new Pokémon nearby. They all go in the direction of the sound and bear witness to a fight between a Litleo and a Pyroar. Turns out this is some sort of tradition to them, as the Pokédex indicates. This tradition being one of those maturity initiation deals,
If you will.
Ash, doesn’t take kindly to seeing Litleo getting beaten, so he plays hero and steps in. After Pikachu’s timely rescue of Ash from Pyroar’s flamethrower, the pride leaves Litleo behind. The twerps decide to care for the little one. This caring doesn’t start off well, as it bites Clemont and refuses a Poképuff from Serena. It then walks away from the twerps.
From above, Team Rocket observes and makes a plan to catch the cub, motivated by what it’ll evolve into. So they dangle a berry in front of it and throw a Pokéball at it.
Oh, never mind. That’s what a smart trainer would do.
As for dimwits like the Trio, their hesitation to act with the Pokémon Trainer Common Sense gets them cornered by a Pyroar. They’re attacked and somehow don’t blast off, which allows Litleo to continue its journey safely. It goes through some trouble, but no matter how hard it gets, Ash insists without a word that it be allowed to undergo this journey alone. And it pays off.
And so far, it’s made it to the Who’s That Pokémon screen. Now time to conclude the journey.
When witnessing the cub almost fall over a cliff on a sliding rock, Ash breaks his “no assistance” code and has Frogadier glue the rock to the ground to save it. Then, when the cub gets washed down a river, Clemont has Chespin rescue him. It’s here that they notice that they’ve all been being observed by the Pyroar from earlier. And when the cub finally reaches a bush or Oran Berries, the twerps realize exactly what the deal’s been all along; it’s been searching for food on its own. Hence its refusal earlier to eat Serena’s Poképuff. And just when Pyroar goes to congratulate Litleo, Team Rocket vacuums Pyroar up.
“Prepare for trouble, you’d think you would learn.”
“Twerps don’t appear to have brain cells to burn.”
“To protect the world from devastation!”
“To unite all people within our nation!”
“To draw from the past but never ever look back.”
“With Pyroar in tow, what a punch we will pack!”
“Jessie!”
“And James!”
“Team Rocket blasts off with a new burst of muscle!”
“Surrender now or get ready for one terrible tussle!”
“Meowth, I’m hustle!”
“Wobbuffet!”
Looks like a new step has been added to the initiation: save Pyroar! While Team Rocket’s Charizard-tank attempts to swallow Pikachu, Litleo attacks it. And for that, it gets a tank-tail to the face. This royally angers Pyroar, who uses Overheat. This only gives the zardtank the ability to use its own flamethrower, of which not even Frogadier can block. But Litleo proves to be able to stand up to it and walk through it to go comfort Pyroar and calm it down. With no firepower, the tank becomes susceptible to Frogadier’s cut attack to free the two lion Pokémon, and Pikachu works with the two lions to send Team Rocket blasting off. Litleo has passed the rite of passage and become independent. And it is on this accomplishment that the journey is…
