Before anyone asks, the new dub episode was released early via iTunes and Amazon. When the dub of this arc comes out, I'll be feeling the excitement everyone else here did. As it is now, it was okay-ish, but its problems held it back. Misused music for the nth time, and Yuki Kaji's absolutely pathetic performance as Squishy ruined the goodbye scene completely. Really finding it hard to believe it's the same man who gave a great performance as Clemont in last week's episode, let alone that it's the same man who won an award for his work in Attack on Titan. But then again, I've seen talented people reduce themselves to pitiful roles before (Dom DeLuise playing Christopher Columbus in The Magic Voyage's dreadful English dub comes to mind). And now that the dub of the Team Flare arc is over, I can finally evaluate it. More than any other part of this saga, it was better dubbed. Like, it's actually tragic how much better this saga is dubbed. Better acting, better writing, and better music. Whereas in Japanese, this arc started strong but ruined itself, the dub of it started strong and became stronger and stronger. When it comes to better acting, this episode's best example of that was the scene where Squishy and Z2 left. Billy Bob Thompson's great portrayal of Squishy, along with the very nice music that was playing (it was not the Squishy Song's piano version, which itself was okay; it was an entirely new piece) made that scene something I found to actually be sad. And another thing: just like how last week's dub episode kept Lysandre's fake death, this one kept his actual death. Just letting that be known since ever since the edits in "Coming Apart at the Dreams!" happened, there was some doubt about what else would or wouldn't be kept. And finally, just felt I'd note this to contest a certain fandom misconception that I've seen a few sub fans perpetuating (that being the bullshit notion that anyone and everyone who sees Pokemon in Japanese will and must instantly love it and remain loving it forever): I saw the entire Team Flare arc in Japanese first three months ago, and then I saw its dub recently. I saw it in Japanese first and English second. And yet,
I STILL liked it better dubbed. |

Well I just uploaded a new guide, and with that I am going to be taking a break from writing anymore of them, so if anybody wants to they can go on ahead and do the rest of Team Flare and the second Son and Moon episode.
I'm almost done with episode 1 and to be honest I really want to do the finale episode of XYZ; unless by some small chance that Tim comes back and wants to do it then I have no problem with it. Other than that I have no problems on doing the last episode of XYZ.

Well, thanks to Amazon and iTunes acting too quickly, the rest of the XYZ season is out and has been republished online. I saw them officially, so I'm going to go over them now. And yes, I liked these episodes better dubbed, too. Just getting that out of the way. "Battling with A Clean Slate!" To get this out of the way, yes, the dub messed up when it had Alvin telling his Vivillon to use Stun Spore when it used Sleep Powder. That was pretty dumb of it. But everything else about the episode was great. "The First Day of the Rest of Your Life!" Well, this is the last time we'll ever hear this awesomeness, but it had an amazing final use. I don't know what Japanese track it replaced, and I don't care. And in general, this being a Serena episode automatically means (to me) excellent dub music and Haven Paschall doing a marvelous acting job. Those were the highlights. "Facing the Needs of the Many!" Greninja's departure is still bullshit, plot-wise. Scene-wise, it was great. Billy Bob Thompson gave that scene the dignity Yuji Ueda couldn't. As for Sarah Natochenny in the same scene, I think she did just as well as Rica Matsumoto. Earlier than that, though, man was Abe Goldfarb (not related to Ed Goldfarb, as he told me personally on Twitter) having a ball as Xerosic. I swear, sometimes I feel like he's channeling Michael York. And yes, from me, that's a compliment. "Till We Compete Again!" Just launched today online (officially and unofficially), which got me here to talking about its predecessors. Now it's the finale's turn. First off, everyone's farewells were very well done. And I think you'll all be happy to know that the dub kept all the montages and the "and to our own way" text intact. As for the montages, Clemont's, Bonnie's, and Serena's montages kept their JP music (which I'm not complaining about, since the XY Pokemon Theme is one of the saga's better JP tracks), and Ash's montage (which originally had V (Volt) slapped onto it) gained an amazing instrumental medley of the first two XY dub openings ("Pokemon Theme XY" Version and "Be a Hero", respectively; the "Be a Hero" section sounds a lot like the orchestral mix of it that appeared in the Volcanion movie dub). And also, the episode's ending credits played during Ash's montage. And over the final scene, we got one last mix of Ash's dub theme. More than I ever said it before, this episode was the best dub-scored of this whole saga. Ed Goldfarb saved his best for the end. But the music isn't all that went right with this episode. As I said before, it was also acted amazingly. Oh, and the moment (you know the one) was kept. With no doubts, I can say this saga was dubbed great, no matter what its many naysayers claim. And on a personal note, this saga was where I returned to the show fully and came to my current mindsets on the show's versions. And finally, when "Till We Compete Again!" airs on TV, it'll be the final dub episode to air on Cartoon Network. When the SM dub starts, it'll be on Disney XD from then on. And as expected, I'll be watching and posting about it here. |

TPCI not bothered to do a lyrical full version of their opening song during the montage like the Japanese version bothered me.
I remember the previous series TPCI would do this in the dub. Yeah, I'm not fond of how TPCI handled their music during XY(Z).
V (Volt) was a brilliant choice in the original, end with the song that started it all, it was perfectly placed in that whole montage.
I also preferred the Japanese version with having no music playing in the back during the last scene, it was just crickets chirping.

However, I still side with how the dub did that montage. The JP version only using V (Volt) just felt like it was trying to evoke memories of only the beginning of the saga, whereas the dub making a medley of the first two of its openings evokes memories of more of the season than just the beginning. It would've been nice if they could fit "Stand Tall" in there somewhere (or maybe it did and I somehow missed it), but overall, it was a better fit as far as I'm concerned. Plus, I tend to prefer when a new piece of music is written just for a certain scene (which, frankly, explains a lot when it comes to my preference for the dub music). |

I am very late on saying this, but I must say, Bonnie's English voice actress (too lazy to look up her name) did well with singing Squishy's Song.
All was going well... then TPCI ruined it by playing music in what was supposed to be a shocking scene which is why it was silent in the original.
You know what I'm talking about, I don't have to explain it. What made it worse is it was the "matching with the movement of the scene" music.
That's right, I despise the music TPCI gave to the XY series, mainly for that. It is making me miss their previous series music which was tolerable.
TPCI also never 'stayed still' with their XY music, they would suddenly change it because, uh, something roared and then go back to the previous.
You know how TPCI gave everyone their own theme? That is fine, but you don't have to play it every time that character shows up on the screen.
Character themes are only supposed to be played when the character is actually doing or saying something that will be notable to all the viewers.
I've been meaning to reveal what I think of the dub XY music for a long time now, but instead I decided to wait until the dub version of XY(Z) was over.
