Last time Ash met Valerie... sort of, he was at least in the audience at her big fashion show, and had time to do some special trainin' against her Fairy-types as it's the first time he's ever faced them, not including retroactive continuity. Sawyer's also here as he can watch, and Serena's sure that Ash will be able to win because he and his Pokémon will work together against Valerie's...
Valerie's assistants greet Ash and friends, as he announces he's here for a Gym battle. They then lead him up a flight of stairs to the Battlefield which is set up in a rather large, specifically Asian fashion. Ash catches on that Valerie's not present, but that's because as a fashion designer, she had to make a BIG entrance. All the panels in the walls on the gym are LED light boards creating a very Japanese Cherry Blossom leafs blowing pattern.
She enters and asks Ash how many badges he has, and he tells her five, and as soon as he beats her six. Ash is getting a bit ahead of himself of course, but hey.
The rules are set and each trainer only has use of two Pokémon, which catches Ash a bit by surprise, since he's been using three for awhile.
Valerie sends in her Pokémon first, which brings us to a bit of a weird issue. Valerie's designs are meant to look good when worn in battle, but how the hell does she throw out Pokéballs with that thing over her arms?
Oh well, there's no time to ponder that as her first Pokémon is Sylveon, the Fairy-type evolution of Eevee. She again speaks to her Pokémon and avoids explaining to Ash her horrific creation in that lab and says that she always wanted to be a Pokémon when she grew up, so she learned to speak to them instead. It's like Meowth's story - but in reverse, and also weird.
She says that she can't understand every Pokémon, but can specifically understand hers, who all just happen to be Fairy-type. Then Ash sends in his first Pokémon, and it's poor Fletchinder.
The battle begins, and Ash starts with Steel Wing, which as we say in the business - the Pokémon business - Steel Wing is Super Effective against Fairy-type Pokémon.
As Sylveon recovers it comes back with a Disarming Voice, that catches Fletchinder with it's voice and disarms it with heart shapes. Ash follows up with a Peck, that Sylveon dodges and catches in it's ribbon-like tendrils, and swings it around, a very Ash-like move, actually.
Sylveon then blasts the poor bird with Fairy Wind, which fortunately comes out the front end, and is not the other kind of wind. Poor Fletchinder is being swung and winded on and everyone's concerned about it.
The wind stops, but Sylveon continues to spin the bird, until Ash reveals Fletchinder's "hidden fangs", and uses Flame Charge to burn Sylveon off of it.
Sylveon goes back in with Giga Impact, and Fletchinder counters with Steel Wing. A single strike happens, and the Pokémon stand and wait for the other to fall. Fletchinder falters, but Sylveon ends up the one who falls dead, all of Valerie's assistants are shocked, including the referee who doesn't call Sylveon out until Valerie instructs her too. Sylveon is unable to battle, and Fletchinder wins.
Ash just now has one Pokémon to go to defeat Valerie for his Gym badge. Of course, this also means Valerie still has one Pokemon to take down Ash's two, which is totally a possibility, they don't just hand out "Gym Leader" titles after all. Valerie isn't stuck here with Ash, Ash is stuck here with Valerie, as she sends in her next Pokémon - Spritzee, the tiny Cotton Candy Plague Doctor.
They start the match, and Ash begins again with Steel Wing, and Spritzee dodges and sets up Trick Room, that's one we haven't seen in awhile.
Fletchinder is a bit perturbed and Ash tries to calm it down. Sawyer, and Bonnie have never seen the move before either, and Clemont explains that it's a Psychic-type move... but before he says anymore, Ash isn't here for explanations, and has Fletchinder "speed it up" with another Flame Charge, but he goes pretty slow.
As Clemont now has time to explain - Trick Room basically reverses speed, despite this new information Ash goes in with another Flame Charge as Fletchinder gets hit with Dazzling Gleam knocking it into the very corporeal Trick Room ceiling.
Ash goes for ANOTHER Flame Charge that misses, and then ANOTHER Flame Charge yet again and Fletchinder gets knocked down by a Gyro Ball.
What the hell could Ash be doing? Clemont figures he must have cooked a plan in that cavernous expanse he calls a brain, as Ash keeps calling for Flame Charge.
Now it's just getting sadistic, but after about two more Flame Charges, the Trick Room comes down, and now Ash's insane sadistic plan of insanity comes together. With Trick Room gone, Fletchinder is now once again the faster Pokémon, and the continued speed loss, now results in equal speed gains.
Fletchinder then blasts Spritzee in the face with a Steel Wing that Spritzee can't dodge because it's super fast.
But before Ash has too much time to celebrate, Fletchinder catches a Moonblast to the face and well the beating it took despite Ash's bizarre plan in the Trick Room catches up to it and it's unable to battle.
So, it's time for Ash's Next Pokémon, Hawlucha! Interesting strategy considering Hawlucha can't fly, and is weak to Fairy-types, but he's looking to Main Event SummerSlam and get back in McMahon's good graces. He shows off a bit because Girls are watching, and Valerie is completely smitten with his gimmick.
Ash and Hawlucha start off with Karate Chop that Spritzee easily dodges and sets up another Trick Room.
This means one thing to Hawlucha... IT'S NOW HELL IN A CELL, BROTHER! As Vince McMahon would call it, it's the Devil's Favorite Playground, a demonic structure tailor made by the devil himself to shorten the careers of all who dare enter.
Spritzee immediately takes advantage of the Trick... uh, *ahem* Satan's Twisted Hell Structure by blasting Hawlucha into it.
Hawlucha won't go down that easily though, and Ash has a bit of a talking to Hawlucha.
Valerie mistakes this and thinks this means he can talk with Pokémon, too, but he informs her that nope, he can... kind of sense what they mean. He just, kind of knows.
Well, back to the battle and Ash sends in Hawlucha with a very random X-Scissor, Hawlucha misses but hits the side of the structure. It bounces Hawlucha back, and Ash seems to take note of something. Even Valerie can tell, even with this giant... thing... in the way.
Ash informs Hawlucha to keep an eye on Spritzee's moves (Spritzee by the way is just kind of zipping about in the air for no particular reason at this point) and tells it to watch Spritzee closely.
Valerie says what we've known for awhile, that Ash is an "interesting boy" as she sends in Spritzee for another Gyro Ball... but Hawlucha catches it, and uses it's momentum to bounce off the wall and deliver an X-Scissor that's strong enough to break through Dazzling Gleam and Lucifer's 666-Pit of Destruction, and Valerie and her weird bug-eyes can't believe it.
Spritzee also isn't doing to hot, and takes a Flying Press to the face, but it's still not out as it retaliates with a Moonblast, but Hawlucha dodges and delivers a Hi Jump Kick, RIGHT IN THE FUCKING FACE.
And...
The Cotton Candy Plague Doctor is out. Ash wins!
Valerie thanks her Pokémon, and tells Ash that she hasn't been that inspired in awhile, she then has the foolish idea to ask Ash a philosophical question about Pokémon's and Trainer's hearts becoming one when backed into a corner, Ash doesn't know why, but totally gets it.
Well, Ash now has the Fairy Badge (and again, only Pikachu celebrates with him) and then Sawyer gets all up in Ash's face about how he won like that, but Ash says the only way to show him is through a battle, as the journey is...
