865: Fokko VS Mafokushī! Karei Naru Pafōmansu Batoru!!
859: Battling with Elegance And a Big Smile!
Pierre, our terribly accented Showcase MC does a show on TV that introduces Shauna from her win at that Showcase, and the twerps marvel over how she's famous now, in some Pokémon Center in some random city, because Kalos' geography lead them from the Lumiose Badlands to this convenient stand-in for Lumiose City, and Serena is EXTRA pumped to catch up to her, while also...
Out in the battle yard of the center, Serena is going over plans for her next Showcase. Her surrogate husband and daughter will watch and act as a cheering crowd.
She starts by having Fennekin and Pancham run and jump, and land on their front paws, and Ash and Bonnie lose their shit.
A little premature, but who am I to say anything about this happy family. Anyway, Serena starts with the actual performance, and has Fennekin shoot a ring of fire that Pancham has to jump through. It makes it about halfway through, before burning it's ass on the last bit. Needless to say Pancham isn't happy, and gets right up in Fennekin's face about it, like she did it on purpose.
Serena calms them, and tries it once again. This time Pancham makes it through unharmed, but trips and falls on top of Fennekin, pissing her off.
Pancham jumps on Serena's shoulders, continuing to piss off Fennekin, bouncing back and forth between her shoulders, until Serena let's them have it.
She reads them both the riot act as Ash tries to calm her down.
Serena then gets depressed again, and decides she wants to have some alone time and runs off.
Pancham and Fennekin know they done fucked up now.
Meanwhile, by a creek Jesse is super pissed that Shauna is currently stealing her spotlight. She should have won that Showcase, and she knows it, and you know it, too!
Jesse and Meowth are lost in the excitement, while an unusually somber James sits by the creek fishing, and reminds Jesse that being Kalos Queen doesn't actually give her any real legislative powers.
Serena then stands in a window at a clothing store, staring at her reflection feeling bad for herself over yelling at her disobedient Pokémon, before she can get too swallowed in the throes of depression, some weird chick from out of nowhere, completely misses Serena's entire purpose for standing there and suggests that some other hat might look better on her.
Serena corrects her, and to cheer her up, tells her what every parent tells their child about making faces, I.E. If you keep making that face it'll stay that way.
At least I think every parent. It could be a regional thing.
The girl then tells her to always keep smiling, as it's the secret to looking and feeling great, which is the mantra Japanese Idols are feed so they always smile, no matter how many times the thought that somewhere some creepy otaku is snuggling with a hug pillow of them every night crosses their minds.
Serena is wrecked with the thought that this girl looks familiar, but she doesn't quite know who she is. Before she can think too long, this mysterious girl, who we have absolutely no clue who is, no way no how invites Serena to come with her.
STRANGER DANGER! STRANGER DANGER!
You see, she finally has time off from her mysterious job and wants someone - apparently just any random chick she met on the street - to go shopping with her.
She introduces herself as Ari... ugh... ana, and then pushes Serena to go with her, and definitely not into her creepy windowless white van.
We see them shopping, and by "them" I mean Ari... ugh... ana mostly tries on clothes while Serena just kind of looks on in the background.
Ariana then remembers where she's seen Serena before, and it was in the Pokémon Showcase on PokéVision.
Which reminds Serena of her earlier depression over losing and then losing her temper over her Pokémon being complete idiots at each other.
Ariana distracts her than asks which she thinks is better between two crappy arm bangles - I think that's what they're called - causing her to lose her mind over which she likes, making Serena laugh at her captor's inanity.
And Ariana reminds her that a Pokémon Performer must ALWAYS wear a smile.
Back at the Pokémon Center, Fennekin and Pancham are depressingly looking out the window, hoping that Serena didn't leave to buy a pack of Cigarettes only to never show up again, leaving Ash to be a single Father.
But they assure them that she'll totally be back. Hopefully.
Speaking of people who unceremoniously left the group, Bonnie is worried about Clemont, who is apparently currently actually battling as the gym leader of his gym for the first time in god knows how long.
The trainer he beat who looks high off his ass is SUPER excited about getting his ass beaten by a Gym Leader, as Clemont tells the kid what he did wrong, and he actually takes notes in his notebook, filled with helpful notes like "smoke weed everyday".
Meanwhile, Serena and Ariana are eating at a famous cafe, the food is so good that Serena forgets that Fennekin isn't with her and gets more depressed again.
She seems to have lost the actual reason of what she's depressed over because she yelled at her Pokémon for fucking around being idiots, but seems genuinely depressed that maybe they don't want to showcase with a lowly loser who loses (her thoughts, not mine)
She immediately starts crying again after witnessing some tiny child feed her Furfrou, and Ariana has to pick her back up and suggests that if they are her friends, anything that's important to her is something they care about, too.
She then suggests she apologize to them, which loses the fuck out of me, because they should apologize to her, because they were the ones acting like shits, but whatever.
Later after an oddly silent game of "Who's that Pokémon", we come back to Team Rocket with Jesse apparently using a whip on poor Meowth because he's not paying attention, and she totally needs to be more flashy if she's going to become the Queen of Kalos.
James is TOTALLY indifferent to the whole thing, but Jesse demands he get up and help, to his extreme dismay, as he's probably wishing she had stayed at that log cabin right about now.
Ash watches his daughter Bonnie play with the Pokémon as Serena finally returns from the store and Ash sends in Fennekin and Pancham. Ash tells her they feel bad for what happened, and Serena instead apologizes saying it was her fault (still doesn't make sense).
Ariana shows up and Serena introduces her and Bonnie immediately tries to hook her up on a blind date with Clemont.
Afterwards, Ariana asks if Serena would want have a battle with her and Ash IMMEDIATELY and completely out of nowhere tells her she should accept, BATTLE RIGHT NOW GODDAMN IT! DO IT! 1
Well, Serena can't say no to her man, and the battle is set up.
It's a double battle, Ariana reveals her Pokémon, a Delphox and... Aromatisse, which looks like an ugly fat ballet dancer with a tutu made of cotton candy wearing a plague doctor's mask.
Serena doesn't really seem to care about it though, as she's much more interested in the Delphox.
The Battle begins with Aromatisse reflecting Fennekin's Scratch attack with, well, Reflect, and Delphox lights Pancham's ass on fire with Mystical Fire as Ash remarks that he expects nothing less from Fennekin's final evolved form. Poor Pancham's ass isn't safe from any of the Fennekin evolutions it seems.
Ariana uses the word "performance" which completely tips off Serena that Ariana is a Pokémon Performer, somehow. Serena then says that this is a "performer's battle", which is exactly the same as a regular battle, but they say the word "performance", once in a while.
Anyway, Pancham uses Stone Edge on Aromatisse, but the Reflect is still active, so it don't mean nothing. Ariana gives Serena a speech on working together, and all that and Serena remembers that thing Ash always says all the time.
Anyway, Serena has Pancham use Stone Edge, and Fennekin runs on top of it, as Ariana helpfully explains that Reflect can't block attacks from above, which seems like a major flaw considering how many Flying Pokémon exist, and apparently she can't just set up a second reflect to block aerial attacks (I know that none of this is how the games work, but that's the least of worries, here)
Fennekin then launches a Flamethrower as Ariana decides to fight fire with fire and shoots a Mystical Fire back at her. The Mystical Fire overrules the Flamethrower and Fennekin is down, but before Ariana can finish her off with Charge Beam, Serena has Pancham block it with Dark Pulse.
Serena begins doubting herself again, and starts crying, but remembers an oddly edited version of Ariana's previous speech about always wearing a big smile.
Serena tells her Pokémon that they're the greatest partners of all time, even though they're still kind of getting their asses kicked. Fennekin then remembers all the time it's spent with Serena with an oddly silent montage, that leads me to believe that more music was changed here and then.... and then... she evolves.
Fennekin is now a Braixen as creepy fanboys sit up in their seats looking at the TV, and Pancham manages to dispatch Aromatisse's Charge Beam.
Ariana takes credit for it because she told Serena that thing about their hearts becoming one and then they begin battling again.
Braixen and Pancham use Flamethrower and Dark Pulse, and Aromatisse and Delphox are stunned still and can't believe they got hit with attacks while standing still. Ariana prepares to retaliate, but before she can she gets a call on her Cell Phone. Not her Pokétch, or her Pokégear, but her Cell Phone. (If it turns out it was something dumber like Pokéllphone, or whatever, I reserve the right to pretend this last sentence never happened)
She then apologizes because she has to leave, and Ash is SUPER DENIED the climax... of this battle.
They then shake hands forming Shauna's heart and Ariana's off, after promising they'll meet up again on stage.
Later at the Pokémon Center they prepare to leave this nameless town to head off to Lumiose City, but before they can Pierre comes on in his incomprehensible accent talking about breasts or something, I guess. And Serena in a oddly subtle for this show fashion realizes that Ariana was in fact Aria, and the head off and the Journey is...
Pokemopolis Episode Name: God Save the Queen!
Dodgyness Rating: 3/5
Animation: 3/5
Story: Fanfic writers are having a field day. Still.
Team Rocket: Jesse's not getting cheated out of another Showcase, Goddamit!
Moral Learnt: This totally couldn't have happened in Lumiose City.
