854: Serena no Honki! Gekisō Mēkuru Rēsu!
848: A Race for Home!
The twerps have come across a ranch full of Skiddo, which are tiny versions of Gogoats. Skiddo are apparently the Mount Pokémon (snicker) and produce delicious milk that the twerps wants to drink (giggle), non-too far from them are Team Rocket who also want some of that sweet, sweet Skiddo milk.
Looks like between the two of them, it's going to be...
They get to the store and Bonnie goes full Brock and asks three women at once to take care of Clemont, and she doesn't give a fuck who. The women walk off as Clemont shame-faced tells Bonnie off, meanwhile Serena gets her and Bonnie an ice cream, but not the other twerps.
Bonnie switching gears, is then excited to learn that you can ride Skiddo and crams her ice cream into her maw, but before Serena can finish her next sentence, or Bonnie suffers brain freeze, who should show up but her Mom (because these guides are now written by an American, suck it New Zealand spelling!), Grace.
The twerps are surprised to see Grace, mostly because the mothers in this series tend to never leave the house, but here she is, all outside the house, like a real person.
Grace wants to know why Serena never calls, or texts or even sends a damn postcard, but most of all, she wants to know how her race training is going. You see, Grace has a vision for her daughter to follow in her footsteps and become an international superstar Rhyhorn Racer... Serena on the other hand isn't as keen on this idea.
Grace doesn't pick up on the very obvious cues Serena is throwing off, or doesn't care, probably a litte of column A, and a little ofColumn B. She then greets the rest of the group, and tells Ash about this camp, it's for beginners, and thus the people must ride Skiddo, because Rhyhorn are a bit too rambunctious for them.
Ash recalls that he started off riding Rhyhorn, at which point Serena points out he just had to be in the Rhyhorn race, Ash - perhaps sensing that he's angered his woman, defuses the situation by calling her an awesome teacher, making her blush, and so now he doesn't have to sleep on the couch tonight.
Grace tells him that since he's already been on a Rhyhorn, he can skip this stupid baby class for babies, but Ash being Ash wants to do it anyway, because it's right there in front of him.
Bonnie wants to ride too, and Grace suggests they all do it, even Clemont, who doesn't want to do it, but gets dragged in by his sister. Grace calls on her future star Rhyhorn Riding daughter to help, and the class starts.
Ash is good at riding it, because he's obviously already above these beginners, and Bonnie takes to riding Skiddo like a Psyduck to water, which leads us to a flashback in which we see Serena riding scared on one as her mother tries to comfort her.
Clemont has a little more difficulty, however and gets bucked off.
Ash assures Clemont he'll get the hang of it.
He's not getting the hang of it anytime soon.
Bonnie steals a page from Iris' book now and tells Clemont that he's acting like a little kid. Clemont gets huffy and tells her that some people are good at some things, but not good at other things, which sounds like a terrible excuse, but before they go any further, Grace calls for an intermission, and Bonnie announces her plans to become a Rhyhorn Racer, making her Grace's favorite daughter now.
Meanwhile off in the distance, Serena is still moping, and Ash asks her if anything's wrong, to which she replies no, and Ash shows he has the ability to read people like a brick wall, and takes her at her word, as Grace takes the twerps to lunch with her at the Inn she's in.
Grace makes soup, and Serena and Bonnie glower over her soup, while Grace slags on her daughter for being a shitty cook and even worse daughter, telling everyone how at home all she did was sleep late and skip Rhyhorn training, and leave dishes in the sink, and never take the trash out filling it until it over flowed, and left the seat up, and never flushed after going number two.
MOOOOM!
Well, we don't linger on the awkward conversation for long as everyone calls out their Pokémon, Serena taking the time to introduce Grace to her Pokémon Fennekin and Pancham.
As the twerps and Pokémon eat, Chespin being the greedy fatass it is, steals some of Pancham's food, while it still has food in it's own dish, leading to a classic Pancham and Chespin chase sequence.
Grace ignoring the twerps' dumb Pokémon has a wonderful idea, she wants Serena to do some Rhyhorn race training, Serena kind of mumbles and grumbles and Ash still being terrible at reading people blurts out that Serena wants to be a Pokémon Performer... well, he almost gets the words out until Serena muffles him.
It's time for afternoon training, as Clemont still tries to back out, Serena on the other hand sucessfully backs out and goes behind the Inn to practice her performance, while doing so Pancham jump in the air, then eats in and lands into Fenenkin.
Serena is super depressed, and figures she can't tell her mom she wants to be a Pokémon Performer if she sucks this much shit, Fennekin and Pancham say part of their own names at her, and sheagrees with them, and gets her confidence back remembering Ash's famous catchphrase, "No need to worry"... wait, sorry, I mean Ash's other famous catchphrase, "Never give up until it's over". You know, that one he says all the time, but little does Serena know, Mother is peeking around the corner.
Team Rocket meanwhile have snuck into the area where they store all the Skiddo product, liek cheese and milk and shit (well, no, not shit), which is bizarrely unprotected in anyway it seems, and.... cheese it.
Serena hears, and decides she has to do something, as Team Rocket rushes past the rest of the ranch. They get the message that they're "cheese thieves", and Ash adorably chases after them on his koot widdle Skiddo, followed by the other two Twerps.
Serena knowing Rhyhorn are faster than Skiddo (really?) runs to the closest one, gets it set, and chases after them, as Grace admires her daughter's natural Rhyhorn racing ability, and then joins the chase herself.
Team Rocket are less than enthused to notice they're being persued, however, they're much quicker than Ash, so they're in no danger, until Serena catches up, and has Rhyhorn Tackle the truck from the side, and tells them to give up.
"Prepare for trouble, don't boss us around!"
"And make it double, we rule pound for pound!"
"To embrace the virtues of milk and cheese!"
"We'd never forget about yogurt, please!"
"Jesse!"
"and James!"
"Team Rocket blasts off with a truck full of treats!"
"Surrender now, while we steal your good eats!"
"Meowth, dat's me!"
"WOOOOBUUUUFFFFEEETTT!"
Ash demands Team Rocket gives the food back, and you'll never guess what happens.
They don't!
Instead they send their Pokémon out to fight, Serena joins in and Flamethrows Pumpkaboo into the windshield of their truck, as they continue to fight, Grace and the rest of the twerps show up, and Ash sends Team Rocket blasting off again.
Grace having seen Serena now knows she DOES have what it takes... to be a Professional Rhyhorn Racer, Grace demands that she quit this bumming around the countryside bullshit and come back home, and continue training for Racing Rhyhorn.
Serena then finally tells her mom the truth, she doesn't want to Rhyhorn Race, she wants to be a Pokémon performer.
Grace insists that Serena will just fucking give up as soon as it gets too hard, and Serena has a genius idea to settle this dispute. They'll have a Rhyhorn Race, if Serena loses she'll go home, but if she wins, Grace has to respect her dreams.
Clemont points out that Serena is punching a bit above her weight challenging her Mother, a professional Rhyhorn Racer to a Rhyhorn Race. It'd be like challenging Michael Jordan to a game of basketball, she'd get her breaks beat off.
Grace agrees, and downgrades the race to a Skiddo race, which Clemont thinks she may have a chance, maybe? Apparently Skiddo do better with light riders, which gives Serena the advantage.
They start the race and Grace (which rhymes with race! I JUST GOT THAT!) is in the lead, Serena almost leads up until she eats it, right on her face.
Her and her Skiddo lose valuable ground, as Serena monologues that she left home, because she didn't want to be a Rhyhorn Racer, while forgetting to mention that she just blindly left so she could run into Ash, and have him break off a piece of that ass for her.
She continues to monologue about finally finding her dream, and even though she's quite far behind, this speech allows some magical chicanery to give her the win.
Grace is understanding, that she can't tell Serena what to do anymore, and uses racing analogies to describe her performance from earlier, apparently the Skiddo runs on dreams, and that's why hers suddenly lapped Grace, and why it'll never replace cars as the dominant mode of transportation because dreams aren't as easy to obtain as gas, though they do burn easily.
The twerps say their goodbyes, as Grace inquiries where these two young boys are taking her supple young daughter, and Ash chimes in with "Courmarine City", and by a huge coincidence, Grace hears there's going to be a Pokémon Showcase in the city, but doesn't quite mention when, since that seems like time sensitive information.
And thus, Serena now can continue her new dream... that she randomly discovered from some chick lusting over her at Summer Camp, and to completely ignore her mother, and never call or send a single postcard.
Welp.
