The twerps continuing their way to the Shalour City Gym make a quick stop at the Kalos Canyon. It's a grand ol' canyon, and hopefully Ash doesn't find himself chasing a roadrunner Pokémon off of one. Ash decides that the edge of a cliff is the best place to take a break and everyone agrees. So, they let out their Pokémon, Froakie, Fletchling and... THE FOREST HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, HAWLUCHA!
Fletchling is surprised, he thought he was Ash's only Flying-type, and now he has a much bigger and stronger Flying-type, Poor Fletchling. The rest of the twerps then decide to introduce their Pokémon to Hawlucha as well. Chespin thinks Hawlucha is awesome and tries to become his tag team partner by imitating him. As the twerps laugh at the poor jobber's attempts to move up the card above flies... a woman? She's a Sky Trainer, and Kalos Canyon is apparently famous for them, and their...
The woman with the red hair has a big fire-bird looking Pokémon called Talonflame, going against some guy with a Skarmory. Talonflame knocks Skarmory into the side of the cliff with Steel Wing, then gets hit with Fire Blast after missing Fury Attack. When Ash says he wants to try some dork walks up and tells them that if they want to be in a sky battle they have to learn how to fly. This excites Ash but fortunately before he runs off the cliff he points them towards their practice facility.
When inside he gives them their skintight wing suits, all of them except Bonnie. She has to be "this" tall, and despite trying hard to make herself taller, it doesn't quite work and she can't fly with everyone else. She wants to do it goddammit, but no amount of jumping from one foot to the other is making her taller. Serena offers to stay behind, but Bonnie insists she go, and has Dedenne stay with her, and Chespin, too.
Serena admires her ass in her skintight wingsuit hoping to give Ash a look, while the instructor tells them how to fly, by jumping into the updraft. Bonnie is depressed that they're treating her like a little kid, even though she's a big girl now. While inside the free fall simulator the twerps are impressed as he flies, and then join in, they seem to get the hang of it except Clemont, who immediately falls... free. Ash tumbles down next as Serena and the instructor gracefully come to the ground.
Ash releases Fletchling and Hawlucha to free fall as well, but poor Clemont still can't get the hang of it and slams right into the side.
Poor Clemont.
The chick from earlier bangs on the side of the simulator and asks Ash is he wants a battle. Her name is Moria and she's an instructor also. She completely slags her opponent from earlier and says she's looking for someone new to battle and has an eye on Ash's Hawlucha and Fletchling. Ash of course accepts all challengers and wants a go at her, but is quickly reminded that he's still just learning how to fly, but Moria insists that he'll be fine. Ash says he'll battle with Fletchling as Moria releases who she'll battle with... Talonflame, making her the majority of all online players ever.
"Talonflame, the Scorching Pokémon, and the final evolved form of Fletchling, Talonflame can swoop at incredible speeds when attacking. During intense battles, its wings give off showers of embers as it flies."
Moria tells Talonflame that it's facing Fletchling and... it refuses. Talonflame pulls his creative control and refuses to bump for a cruiserweight like Fletchling, but he will take on Hawlucha. Fletchling is depressed, this was his time to climb the ladder and make himself famous. Moria then proposes that if Hawlucha can win, then they'll take on Fletchling. Fletchling isn't that excited, but Bonnie promises to look after Fletchling while it licks its wounds.
At the canyon, Ash and Moria prepare to fight as Bonnie gives Fletchling a heartfelt speech about how she wishes people would stop judging them for being small, and there's a lot they can do because they're small, except fly in wing suits and ride on most rollercoasters. But still, being small isn't so bad.
At least that's what my friend who is like 5' tells me.
Ash and Moria's battle begins with Talonflame going to Peck, but missing. Ash has Hawlucha come back with Flying Press, but this misses as well. With both Pokémon flying, it's hard to land a move. At least until Talonflame nails Hawlucha with Steel Wing and Brave Bird.
Clemont also chooses this moment to bring up an interesting fact. Hawlucha can't actually fly, it's just falling with style. Which puts it at a disadvantage in this type of match-up. But, Ash is never one to give a fuck about advantages, and the dises of them, and tells Hawlucha to go in and give Talonflame a Karate Chop, but Talonflame just flies to the side, giving a fuck less about Hawlucha's attack.
Talonflame scores a hit with Fire Blast, and Ash has the idea to have Hawlucha grab onto Talonflame's leg. But Talonflame manages to throw Hawlucha back into the cliff face. Fletchling sees something, and Hawlucha's going back after Talonflame with another Karate Chop, but misses and gets knocked back down with Steel Wing. After the dust settles, Hawlucha is down for the count. Hawlucha does the job! Which means poor poor Fletchling won't get to prove itself and it'll be stuck in the midcard forever.
Despite this Bonnie asks if Moria will still let Fletchling battle, and even Ash tries to get her to agree, she appears to be considering it, but before she can answer she hears Talonflame in a bit of a bind. It's trapped in a net out of fucking nowhere and being lifted away. What's going on?
Well, you'll have to wait until after the commercial to find out.
And now that the commercial is over, we find out who's behind it. Why, it's none other than Team Rocket.
"Prepare for trouble, aren't we curious"
"Asking double questions could prove injurious"
"To protect the world from devastation"
"To unite all people within our nation"
"To denounce the evils of the friendly skies"
"To extend our reach to an unfriendly surprise"
"Jesse"
"and James"
"Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light"
"Surrender now or prepare for an airborne fight"
"Meowth, that's right!"
"WOOOBBBUFFETTT!"
After the twerps tell Moria what Team Rocket is and what they're about she tells them to give back Talonflame. However, this time they're better prepared for Team Rocket to not return their Pokémon and just fucking take flight after them, like something out of Super Mario World.
Team Rocket are a bit surprised at the Twerps newfound flying ability, Serena has Fennekin use Flamethrower on Team Rocket's balloon before Ash, Moria and what's-his-name can detach Talonflame's net, while they're still on the net.
Slow it down girl.
With Team Rocket grounded, they have no choice but to fight as they send out Pumpkaboo and Inkay. Ash sends in Fletchling with Razor Wind on Inkay, then Steal Wing on Talonflame's net, releasing him. Pumpkaboo misses with Dark Pulse and gets hit with Fletchling's Peck, then Inkay and Team Rocket are sent blasting off after a Fire Blast from Talonflame.
Talonflame then decides that it likes the cut of Fletchling's jib and it'll battle the little fucker after all, as Bonnie assures it that it'll be awesome.
The two begin their battle, Talonflame opening with Steal Wing, but Fletchling dodges because it's easier because it's small. Fletchling avoids getting nailed with a Fire Blast, and comes back with Peck. Talonflame goes for Brave Bird, but Fletchling dodges as it chases it around the chasm. Talonflame has Fletchling right where it wants it now, and Moria goes for a Steal Wing, but Ash has it dodge and fly up, as Clemont pulls his best Vince McMahon by stating "WHAT A MANEUVER".
Moria gets serious and orders another Brave Bird, and it nearly Brave Birds Fletchling AND Ash. Ash surprises Moria by having Fletchling use Double Team to avoid another Fire Blast, and scores a direct hit with Razor Wind.
Moria's none to happy, and scores a hit with Steal Wing, then prepares to finish it, by barbequeing the little bird with a direct hit from Fire Blast.
Poor poor Fletchling.
As it sits inside the fire, being baked alive it begins glowing, like most birds do when you cook them, except it's not being grilled... it's evolving.
"Fletchinder, the Ember Pokémon, once in flight, Fletchinder can reach its top speed extremely quickly, giving it the edge in battle by attacking it's opponents before they can get prepared."
Little poor Fletchling has evolved into Fletchinder, and also learned Flame Charge apparently. Fletchinder goes after Talonflame, who dodges as Clemont tells us that the more it uses Flame Charge the faster it'll become. I don't quite remember that happening with Pignite or anything, but whatever.
Ash has Fletchinder dodge Talonflame's next Brave Bird and destroy a rock column with Flame Charge. Ash has Fletchinder use Flame Charge two more times the second hitting him RIGHT IN THE FUCKING STOMACH, knocking it unable to battle, winning one for all the small people out there, like my previously mentioned 5' tall friend who now - thanks to Fletchinder - can also beat a Talonflame.
As the twerps say their goodbyes the guy who's name we never learn tells Bonnie that when she grows just a little bit taller he'll have a special suit just for her, but seeing as she'll probably never be back, it'll just go to waste.
