For the sake of clearing up questions and confusion for potential new members, I decided to make a thread of frequently asked questions, even though as of now none of these questions have been asked frequently.
What is Pokemopolis?
Originally called "Pokémon, Pokémon", Pokemopolis was a site created by a young animation student named Brandon in 1999 as one of many sites he created for fun, before soon moving on to other things. Around the same time, he had introduced fellow students Tim and Lex to the show Pokémon, which they quickly fell in love with. Renaming the site from "Pokémon, Pokémon" to Pokemopolis, Tim and Lex shifted the focus of the website to the more dodgy elements they perceived from watching the show, such as Professor Oak's oddly close relationship to Ash's mum; Ash's stupidity; Brock being a horndog; Togepi being an evil leech that ruined Misty as a character; James' "obvious" homosexuality; Team Rocket's utter inadequacy as bad guys contrasted by their skill and nous as legitimate business enterprise; and of course the underlying concept of just how the hell the Pokémon world could possibly operate with no apparent centralised Government and gangs of school drop-outs bumming around the countryside cockfighting.
The site quickly grew in size, with features such as episode guides for the show, as well as a high amount of fan interactivity and contributions. A community was soon formed, calling themselves "Dodgers", with Tim and Lex being the "Dodgemasters". Soon the amount of active members began to put a strain on things so the forum needed to become streamlined and the chat feature on the forum got removed, and a lot of users left out of disagreement over the changes.
Eventually Tim found himself back in a position where he had free time again. Catching up (slowly!) on episode guides for those episodes he had missed as well as keeping up to date with current episodes, Tim eventually completed his task to have an episode guide for every aired episode of Pokémon up on the site. Of course, many of the early episode guides were extremely short or otherwise incomplete, as well as using an old and out of date format. Out of desire to start things anew, the decision was made to strip out everything but the episode and movie guides, and drastically trim down the existing forum to fit the smaller user-base. A shift to a new domain (pokemopolis.net became pokemopolis.com) as the old webhosting expired served as a symbolic new beginning. The website was now focused entirely on episode guides.
Unfortunately on April 13th, 2014, Tim announced that the forum was going to be closing at the end of the month, and the Pokemopolis website a year and a half later, when the webhosting expired. So, several users on the forum decided to continue the forum community on a new, free forum and continue where Tim left off on the episode guides.
So what do you guys do here?
Pokemopolis' main purpose is to discuss the underlying dodginess and other themes in the Pokemon anime. So mostly we like to shoot shit about the show, post dodgy-looking screencaps, and whatever else you can think of. The most important part of this forum though is the episode guides we write about for each episode.
Can I write an episode guide?
Sure you can, but first you need to be approved by a site admin to gain permission to write a guide. This can be done by writing up your own sample guide, or maybe put up a little bit of writing work you've done in the past, or just by showing how you carry yourselves on the forum and proving you're a funny guy.
How do you guys decide which people write which episodes?
Llllllemme get back to you on that.
I'm a bit stuck on writing this guide. You got any tips?
Let me tell you what Tim said:
Here is the key "one weird secret" to write a successful Pokemon guide.
Don't take it seriously. Ever. Even for a moment. What you're doing is not important or key or necessary or a grand undertaking or official or the authority. You're having fun just writing something silly.
There you go, you now know how to successfully write an episode guide. If at any point you're not having fun or you're taking it seriously or worrying about canon or freaking out that something doesn't make sense because of game stats or something, then you're doing it wrong.
Do you guys talk about the Pokémon games here, too?
Yeah sure, whatever.
Your site's name is spelled wrong it's supposed to be "Pokémopolis", not "Pokemopolis".
First off, that isn't a question.
Second, that's intentional. I think.
What are the forum's rules?
Don't be an asshole.
I want to make a Pokemopolis DeviantArt group/webseries/comic/interpretive dance/taco salad!
No. Anything pertaining to Pokemopolis has no business outside of Pokemopolis.
That should cover just about anything you would want or need to know. Hope you have fun here!
