921: "Rival Showdown! Satoshi VS Shōta!!"
914: "A Full Strength Battle Surprise!"
We’re closing in on Snowbelle City at last. Sawyer, having just seen Ash wipe the Pokémon Center battlefield with a trainer’s Scizor, decides to challenge his idol to a battle. Things may not have gone well for him last time, but why don’t we see how well things go this time. Both parties have gotten stronger, so it’ll definitely be…
While catching up with one another, we see that Sawyer has won eight Gym Badges.
I guess this wasn’t important enough to warrant screentime. Poor Sawyer got robbed.
One of those badges is from Snowbelle City, it looks like. This gets Ash inspired more than ever to take on the next Gym, which he now learns is an Ice-type Gym. And hearing that Ash fought the Kalos Champion and almost got Ash-Greninja to work perfectly gets Sawyer excited for a 3v3 battle. And so, they’re on!
But first…
Some vines rush out of a forest. Due to…
The Earth Emperor’s Spirit Cannon?!
No, actually, it’s a Zygarde-powered cannon made by Team Flare. And as Squishy hears Z2’s cry of concern for its safety, Bonnie sings a very saccharine song to it.
Ash and Greninja get their Yo-Kai Watches on and are ready for battle. Sawyer send out Doublade to start things off, and Ash sends out Noivern. Doublade’s Iron Defense stops Noivern’s Acrobatics, joining Reflect, Light Screen, and Safeguard in being moves this show mistakes for Protect/Detect/King’s Shield. Battle accuracy resumes once Doublade uses Slash to send Noivern to the ground. Doublade goes in to finish Noivern off with a Night Slash…
…being quite literal with that “finish it up,” huh?
But Noivern doesn’t let Doublade decorate itself with Noivern’s heart and uses Supersonic (or Boomburst) on it, then flies up and uses Dragon Claw. Acrobatics wins it for Noivern. Next up is a Clawitzer, who starts with Crabhammer, which gets countered by Boomburst. A Heal Pulse fixes that up quickly. Dragon Claw comes too late to hit Clawitzer, whose Dragon Pulse finishes it. Ash’s next Pokémon is Hawlucha.
…anyway. Hawlucha, who is dodging all of Clawitzer’s attacks, is next. But Clawitzer jumps by using Dragon Pulse as a jetpack and nails Hawlucha with an Ice Beam. It’s down in one shot. So now, Ash’s new MVP is up next. Dragon Pulse misses, as does Ice Beam. Cut lands, though, and takes Clawitzer down in one shot. Ash and Greninja experience no fusion yet, which is trouble since Sawyer’s Sceptile is up next. A swashbuckling of Aerial Ace and Leaf Blade produces no results, and neither does Water Shuriken colliding with Bullet Seed. Sceptile’s Leaf Blade eliminates Greninja’s Double Team copies. Leaf Storm sweeps Greninja off his feet and damages it heavily, meaning that now is the time for Greninja to transform.
Which ends up not happening. So, it’s not voluntary, and also not even guaranteed. One more Leaf Storm and Leaf Blade wins Sawyer the match as a result of this opening.
Ever the good sport he’s become, Ash allows Sawyer to accompany him and his friends to Snowbelle City, where Ash’s Gym battle is waiting. Let’s see if he can win it as the journey is…
