884: Ore ta sae Ore ta Kokoro! Tērunā no Tsuyoki Omoi!!
877: Mending a Broken Spirit!
After leaving the Pokémon Center, today finds the twerps at... the Pokémon Center, a different one, in the middle of the woods. Serena stares intently at her Princess Key, and decides that it's time to try something new for the next Showcase, while Jesse looks on angrily, because she's going to win the next one, goddamn it!
Serena goes over their strategy of modifying the move they used last time, this includes Pancham jumping around a bunch of fire Braizen throws, and Pancham severely injuring Braixen with Stone Edge.
But she's fine, or so she thinks until she realizes her stick's bent, and then breaks right off.
Mother always said that's what would happen if you kept playing with your stick.
Pancham tries to apologize, but Braixen isn't having it.
Everyone then sits around and gets really sad about Braixen's stick, so Pancham runs into the woods and find a completely identical replacement stick, but Braixen refuses. After watching Braixen coldly refuse Pancham's branch, Ash and Clemont decide to run off and find another, while Braixen continues to mope.
The twerps - except Bonnie - also find exact duplicates, in varying sizes, but for whatever reason Bonnie's looks different, and has leaves. They meet back at the Center, and lay all the branches out. Braixen looks them over, refuses all of them, and runs off like a big whiny baby, who needs her poopy diaper changed, as she runs and whines and screams and throws her cereal around generally making a huge mess of things.
James himself is pretty upset about seeing the thing he's seeing, in the twerps not understanding Braixen's whiny baby feelings. To her, that incredibly ordinary stick is irreplaceable, but to him it reminds him of his childhood, where he also collected things that other people see as incredibly ordinary things. Why yes, it's a return of Young James and his Bottlecap collection. He runs into the house excited to have found another bottlecap, but as he goes to add it to his collection, he's horrified to learn that his mother has thrown them out.
He had special memories associated with them, and whether or not they were rare, they meant something to him. And thus, Braixen is going through the same thing, but Serena clearly can't see that, which sets her off again, and she runs off until running into a man with blue hair named Ja... Jeeves.
Nice save, buddy.
Serena apparently finally remembers what it is that makes this specific branch so special, it was the branch she had when Serena announced she was going to be Kalos Queen - because of her moves, and that branch.
They take the branch to the Pokémon Center to see if Nurse Joy can repair it, and her response is basically, no. She works on Pokémon, not sticks. But just then she gets an idea and runs to the back, but before coming back, the other members of Team Rocket watch from outside, completely flabbergasted at what James is trying to accomplish. But Jesse has another plan, stealing them, because if Serena has no Pokémon she'll be one less rival to her.
Nurse Joy is back, and she is telling Serena and James about a famous Tree Surgeon, Woodward (you know, in about 17 years of this show, "Tree Surgeon" may be one of the more ridiculous things I've heard) who once re-attached a Sawsbuck's horn, which - considering Sawsbuck is a Pokémon and not a tree - makes him a more capable Nurse Joy.
They go to his place, and at least one shot establishes that he is treating one tree with an IV Drip. He looks at the broken branch James declares him a skilled Wood Specialist, as he should know a thing about Wood. When James brings up the Sawsbuck, he tells them that was only possible, because the Sawsbuck had a strong desire to reattach it's horn, because it was a part of it's body.
"But we also have a strong desire to get that branch repaired" whines Serena, so Woodward tells them they'll have to prove it. Apparently searching out a weirdo in the middle of the woods, who gives IV Drips to trees wasn't enough, oh no, now they have to battle him as well.
The other twerps trespass on Woodward's property just in time to ask of what the deal is, and Clemont steps in as the referee. Wooward being a gentleman lets Serena go first, and she has Braixen use Scratch, that Gallade promptly dodges. Bonnie doesn't understand why instead they didn't use Flamethrower, but Ash assumes it must be difficult, because she always used Flamethrower from her branch, and not like, her mouth. Ash gives her encouragement, and Serena sends in Braixen with another Scratch, that Gallade dodges again, and takes a Slash right in the muzzle.
Looks like Braixen may have needed that branch after all, is the conclusion Ash comes to. Gallade goes in with a Psycho Cut, and Braixen dodges it, right before a hard light net comes down and almost captures Pikachu. Despite watching it happen, Ash asks what just happened.
"Prepare for Trouble, you really don't know?"
an awkward pause passes as James throws off his hat and glasses
"Prepare for trouble, let's try this again!"
"And make it double, we're clever times 10!"
"To protect the world from devestation!"
"To unite all people within our nation!"
"To denounce the evils of truth and love!"
"To extend our reach to the stars above!"
"Jesse!"
"and James!"
"Team Rocket regroups at the speed of light!"
"Surrender now, a future without Pikachu looks bright!"
"MEOWTH, THAT'S RIGHT!"
"WOOOOBBBBUUUUUFFFFEEEEETTT!"
Jesse yells at James before invading his privacy and reaching down his... *ahem* "back pocket", as he screams "Oh my!", and pulling out another hard light cage emitter.
Jeez James, you keep it up there?
Before Jesse has a chance to throw it (wash it off, first!) Serena steps in and angrily starts attacking using Pancham's Stone Edge, and Braixen using the remaining pieces of her branch to emit a Fire Blast, fully destroying the branch in the process. And afterwards Pikachu blasts them off. and as they fly away, James begs Woodward to fix the stick.
Serena tries begging again for Woodward to fix the branch, but he reveals that the branch was DOA, therefore this entire thing was a waste of everybody's time.
However, he does have a reason, stating that becoming overly attached to things from the past can keep you (YOU) stuck in the past as well, and she should be able to master anything she possesses if she hold onto the strong feeling she felt when she learned Fire Blast.
At that moment, Pancham pulls the previous stick from his "back pocket" and offers it to Braixen again. Serena sits it up, that since she didn't become Kalos Queen with that branch they can start a new promise with Pancham's branch. Braixen's all in, and Serena ties a cute little bow on it.
So Woodward decides to continue the battle, starting with Psycho Cut, that Braixen dodges and launches off a Fire Blast, not quite knocking Gallade out, but at least putting him down.
Later as the twerps prepare to leave, Woodward takes what's left of the branch and attaches and plants it into the ground. Serena promises the branch that they'll come back and tell it all about their success which, while insane, is a cute enough gesture.
To make this moment even more insane, Serena asks where Jeeves went, because on time of not knowing it was James, she didn't see him change RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER, and thus the stupid kids head off with the new branch as the journey is...
