887: Photo Op on Fire! Snap the Legend!!
880: A Legendary Photo Op!
We open with the twerps still heading to Anistar City. On their travels, they pass by Mt. Moltou. Clemont identifies it as a volcano by noticing something Ash didn’t: that there’s smoke coming from near the top of it. As they say, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” And assuming that a certain bird made of the stuff lives there, it’s sure to be…
Anyway, what is easier to notice is the Charmeleon behind the bushes. Pikachu and Dedenne nearly get burned when attempting to greet the stranger. Trevor comes out from the bushes and gets burned trying to calm his lizard down.
Ash must be having flashbacks by now.
Ash suggests battling in order to calm the rebel down. He sends out Fletchinder to do the job. Fletchinder escapes Fire Spin just by going up and can deflect a Flamethrower with Steel Wing. Another Steel Wing brings the rebellious Charmeleon down.
All talk, no walk.
The twerps get to conversing with Trevor, noting that they haven’t met since the Pokémon Summer Camp. During the catch-up, Trevor lets them know that Tierno told him that Serena’s “clothes and hair are looking amazing these days.”
Remember, kids: beauty is beyond skin deep.
Trevor finally pops the question that exposes why he’s here. He wants to know if the twerps are also looking for Moltres. See, he’s read many documents that led to the conclusion that Moltres is living here at Mt. Moltou.
Who wouldn’t want to live somewhere that almost has the same name?
And Trevor does indeed want a photo of Moltres, having already gotten photos of Zapdos and Articuno.
Please do leave it at photos. Trying to collect the real things went awry for the last person who tried doing that.
How’d that get there?
Well, actually, that’s apparently a rare Scatterbug with an abnormally sized antennae. Yep, I didn’t see it, either. But you had me at Legendaries, so go back to those.
Or, just prattle at a googolplex words per second about your entire album.
Fletchinder ain’t pleased, either.
So, it’s decided that they will go meet Moltres to get that precious photo. Team Rocket conspires to claim the fire bird for themselves.
Does the name “Lawrence III” mean anything to you? Look him up to find a very compelling cautionary tale.
On the way up the mountain, Moltres is the topic of discussion. Trevor says that it was apparently an accident that the not-phoenix got a bad picture taken of it.
Trevor must be out to fix that poor fool’s mistake.
Clemont thought they’d come across a situation like this, so he unveils the “Rock Searcher Mark I”.
Placing the bad photo gets the thing searching not for rocks, but for the firebird. Not far behind is Team Rocket, vowing to stick to the twerps like glue. The machine searches the rocks and finds nothing, but deep in the volcano, something stirs.
And what is stirring in the bumper?
Charmeleon, of course! Now, back to the volcano.
Trevor notices a rare pattern in that Crustle’s earth shell. Looks like the trip will have to wait a bit while Pokémon with subtle rarities happen by. This distraction gives Team Rocket a chance to get ahead of the twerps, catching up to the Rock Searcher just as its results come up positive. Jessie kicks the thing, making it explode, getting the twerps’ attention.
After a small chase, the machine leaps into the magma to kill itself.
At least no twerps fell in…
Nor did Team Rocket, who snatch Pikachu up.
“Prepare for trouble, that certainly went well.”
“And make it double, success is swell!”
“To protect our work and all it achieves.”
“To expose our roles as Pikachu thieves.”
“To denounce the evils of taking appalling pics.”
“To watch you lie there like a ton of bricks.”
“Jessie!”
“And James!”
“Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!”
“Surrender now, or prepare for a photo finish fight!”
“Meowth, that’s right!”
“Wobbuffet!”
A battle for Pikachu’s freedom is on, in which Fletchinder goes one-on-two against Inkay and Gourgeist.
A Gourgeist of rare size gives Trevor another chance to waste SD Card space. He sends Charmeleon to back Fletchinder up. The ensuing battle ends up enraging Moltres, who emerges in a fiery rage. Trevor snaps his coveted photo at last. Team Rocket takes their chance to attack, but to no avail. They blast off and lose Pikachu in the process. Everything is now fine, except for the raging not-phoenix above them. Frogadier’s Water Pulse and Charmeleon’s Flamethrower does nothing to calm the beast, who strikes Fletchinder down with one fiery shot.
But that won’t keep the little brave bird down, as it speeds to the twerps’ rescue.
And evolution is its prize.
With a new form, it’s time for Talonflame to be a hero.
Oooh, that didn’t go well…
Now it’s Ash’s turn to be a hero.
Oooh, that’s a fatal lack of foresight.
And now it’s Frogadier’s turn to be a hero.
That’s a relief.
This Leeroy Jenkins display impresses Moltres and convinces it to leave the twerps alone. Good thing Trevor got his photo.
The trip turned out to be worth it. Trevor completed his collection, and Ash got a new evolved Pokémon. Much can be expected of a fully-evolved Pokémon, which we’ll see soon, as the journey is…
