A Young Royal Flame Ignites!
It's nice to get an episode that had Kukui's double-role factor in, even though it was just a bit in the first act with a repeat at the end. And man, Abe Goldfarb must've loved this episode a lot. He was the best part of the episode by far.
Are all Alolan sports just willfully ignorant of rules? First the baseball episode, now this.
That promised final battle is likely going to be saved for the end of the SM saga.
The most brilliant music bit was that deceptively calm and whimsical music over the Feint Attack scene suddenly getting cut off by the Pikachu vs Surskit music from XY once the attack lands. Never thought I'd see such a great justification of erratic editing. Mr. Goldfarb's music will always beat Miyazaki's wretched miserable noise. Always.
This was a better sports episode than the last such case, I gotta say.

Torracat learned Revenge! A move like will be quite useful against a Dark Type like Incineroar. *wink* Speaking of Incineroar, The gap between it and Torracat seems much smaller than before. I feel like that's how the XY series should have portrayed Ash's Froakie and Sanpei's Greninja, instead of have it outclass Greninja after it evolved...

All They Want to do is Dance Dance!
It's clever of each dance to incorporate each Pokemon's type, body shape, and abilities. And this may be odd to say, but TR was actually used properly here. They actually mattered to the episode as they caused the events that led to Steenee evolving. Speaking of which, man, what a sequence that was. It started off hilarious with that closeup of her butt (the expansion of which broke the net; that was clever), got a bit creepy with a closeup of her chest, and the rest of it was gorgeous. Why can't all Pokemon have elaborate evolution sequences like that?
So the old lady's name is Anella. I remember SM064 being when her JP name was revealed, so dub fans like me had to wait just a bit longer to find her name out.
Gotta be real here: Tsareena's JP voice made me throw up in my mouth when I heard it in one of those Eevee shorts. My God, I thought 4kids made Rouge the Bat sound like a slut, but that's got nothing on Tsareena's JP voice. It's like the casting director thought "hey, Hartman hips = slut! LOL!" Tsareena's dub voice is the biggest vocal improvement over the JP version the SM dub has ever seen. That's a royal voice worth respect right there.
Team Rocket's crossdressing and Tsareena's butt closeup are here to stay in the dub. Another wrong guess by... well, you all know who by now. Though ironically, the thing that did get censored was the most obvious thing, yet still no one suspected: Tsareena doesn't dig her heel into Meowth's back; instead, she just rests her foot on him (the dub freeze-frames that heel-digging shot).
Man, the music was spectacular in this one, except for the usual lingering JP leftovers that think they belong, and except for the beginning of Popplio's dance using the dub's chase theme for some reason. It was fun for the majority of it, which makes perfect sense considering the subject matter. Not to mention so many new cues, one of which being for TR's motto. That was brilliant. Oh, and Tsareena's theme heard during her evolution sequence was as majestic as she herself is. She got a good voice and a good theme. It's not the absolute best-scored episode of SM (or even Ultra Adventures), but it's a top 5'er for sure.
Honestly, episodes like this are what the SM saga is all about; just people having lots of fun. This is a top 5 placer for me.

The dub music is by no means bad, but it's gotten awful predictable. I was able to guess about 3/4 of the songs in this episode by remembering everyone's dances. To be blunt, it's gotten rather stale.

It is pretty sad that the dub never updated their intro, seeing as the dub's 21st season is nearing its end.
They also did this with the XY series, but with previous series they would update intros. What happened?
Too late to use scenes from "Future Connection" with their 22nd season intro, none of them will fit there.
TPCI didn't have Ash say the title in his shrunken voice in "Dummy, You Shrunk the Kids!" good title there, but they lose points for the former.

Definitely all up for the dub title insulting the Pokemon cartoon's very own Starlight Glimmer. Seriously, that's what Faba is, all the way down to not having learned much of anything since his "turn to good." At least Pokemon cartoon fans can realize this instead of pretending he's really changed.
It's also really satisfying seeing everyone else be justifiably upset at Faba for fucking up this badly. Snowy's reaction to all this definitely deserves its meme status. And Lana's "Failure Director" line was great, too.
I gotta disagree with the dub's choice to use the Rotomdex filter on the shrunken kids. Instead of sounding small, they sound robotic.
Through an animation error, we get to see what a Dragonair's bare tail looks like.
Just who is that who's training/not fully supervising that repeatedly villainous Alolan Persian anyway?
Good thing that medal isn't nullifying Tsareena completely considering it's on her crown. She's grown into quite the fighter.
The meaning of Togedemaru growing is that you're a fucking idiot, Faba.
Okay, what piece of JP music was that infecting the storm drain scene? Whatever it was, it was as unwelcome as JP music always has been since XY began. As usual, though, the dub music shined even though it was average fare on its own. Tsareena sure got a nice and majestic theme for her WTP card. And for the Dedenne scene, I wouldn't be surprised if the XY saga's Denenne's theme got recycled.
Two fun episodes in a row, both being great examples of what the SM saga is at its core.

The Shape of Love to Come!
Mina has made her debut. She sounds exactly like the kind of reserved inspired genius I pictured her as being. And it seems she and Poipole have struck a chord with each other. Bonding over art. A picture says a thousand words, as they say.
Naganadel's voice is a lot higher than I thought it would be, but then again, it's an alien. Like Queen, like swarm.
Team Skull just gets more annoying the more they appear. Though the art stuff they did was funny.
Just as in the JP version, Poipole gooses Lycanroc with Fury Attack. So, once again, suspicions of that being edited out are baseless. Like always.
The music over Poipole's dream was the musical highlight of the episode. It was really tense, not a territory Mr. Goldfarb usually dabbles in. Poipole's crying scene at the school was well-scored, too, as was Mina's evaluation of Poipole's feelings at the end of the episode. Other than that, music was average but enjoyable.
The fun streak is over, and something serious is about to start. I'm looking forward to seeing what it'll lead to.

Since The Power of Us turned out to have the single worst soundtrack of anything in the entire world, I went back and rewatched I Choose You, and I finally figured out why I love its dub soundtrack so much that it's kept its spot as my favorite Pokemon movie soundtrack for just more than a year now.
Yes it wasn't all that nostalgic a soundtrack (only the first dub opening got remixed into not just a song but also two piano mixes (one for the scene of Ash's sacrifice and the other for the ending credits), but its greatest strength is its focus on character and onscreen events. The best examples of this are as follows: the scene where they first take Charmander into the cave and Sorrel starts treating him, during which a cue I'm pretty sure is Sorrel's theme (or perhaps both him and Verity considering how this theme gets reused) plays and gives the scene emotional weight. Then when Ash runs off from the Pokemon Center some time after losing to Cross, a short riff plays that'll end up being important later. Then at the end of Ash's real world nightmare when he's running while Pikachu's blinking into existence, a melancholy piano riff accompanies this. Both of the aforementioned themes get combined and remixes into a positive version for the part where Ash comes back to life (and then it segues into a few notes from Ash's theme that then segues into an instrumental of I Choose You; the best part of the soundtrack in all honesty). Then at the end, when Ash parts ways with Sorrel and Verity, that theme from the cave scene gets remixed (with only a piano this time for the section reusing that theme) and then segues into Ash's theme, excellently symbolizing the end of this journey and the beginning of a new one. The dub soundtrack is full of greatness like this and it gets better every time I go back and listen to it, even though the movie itself is painfully average.
It all comes down to skill of composition and use, and this movie's dub had both territories covered.
