Just as I feared. The dub didn't fix the movie's true biggest problems, those being the bland characters and unfocused story. The middle was still the only good part. So, yeah, not too different from when I saw it in Japan.
However, the animation looked gorgeous, the acting was amazing, and the dub music...
HOLY GOD IN HEAVEN!!!
It's my new favorite Pokemon soundtrack of all time, taking that spot from the dub soundtrack of "The Power of One"! All the background music, the opening song, and ESPECIALLY the ending song were the best ever given to the franchise. I would definitely buy it on CD or stream.

Honestly, all I remember this episode for is that screencap of Mallow at the "bar." It's honestly entirely forgettable.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present you the worst Pokémon TV series DVD cover ever (and I don't need to explain why):  There's one comment that says they feel sorry for all the parents and their children having to witness such an outrage and I agree. Especially since swearing was involved. And I am already thinking of how grown men ruined the My Little Pony movie for little girls. I heard that in Japan people were quiet during that scene, there were people getting emotional, but nobody acted like wild animals. Was that also the case for you when you saw the movie in Japanese theatres? Did everybody respect their fellow audience member? |

"Balloons, Brionne, and Belligerence!"
I've been looking forward to this one since its Japanese airing. Honestly, Popplio is adorable, and Brionne is both adorable and pretty. So I was happy to see that they were the stars of the episode. And Popplio can finally use a Z-Move now, putting Lana's Z-Ring to good use.
"How do you search the bottom of the ocean?" asks Ash, someone who's been in many a diving vehicle. That was funny in a forgetting-about-past-experiences kind of way. Also, Rosie Reyes, who normally has a serious problem with underacting so much so that she sounds like she could belong to the JP cast, did very good in this episode. For once, she actually did something more than underact: she actually acted. I hope she can keep that up.
I heard that atrocious "Pose!" song (which is indeed bad, but there are worse JP songs) was used in the JP episode, so I'm glad that's gone. And as I'm currently playing Ultra Sun (as of this post), I find it beneficial that there's only one JP track in it, as I don't have to hear the truly good G7 tracks get fucked up by a has-been. The M20 dub soundtrack sorely outclasses the TV dub music, so I'm just going to remove it from the equation and discuss the episode's music on its own merits. It was great hearing Popplio's theme gain such promincence. Brionne's theme was as lovely as the Pokemon herself. And while the Z-Move Theme had been heard before, it once again belonged. That is how to properly re-use music cues.
After last week's borefest, this was a much-needed episode. Because hey, shit actually happened in this one, and it was great to see.

Since when has any one of the Japanese voice actors underacted in Pokémon? Did you have your sound turned down?
Whether you enjoy a character's voice or not, nobody in the Japanese cast has ever done a half-assed job at voicing.
Perhaps there might have been a bit of overacting, but nobody there has ever went under and that is a complete fact.
Now there's been some underacting in the dub, especially in scenes when a character is clearly yelling or being energetic.
It's like whoever is guiding these voice actors don't allow them to go all out. They need tips from the Funimaiton voice cast.

"How can you throw us out for a silly little thing like cheating?!" Jessie asks a guard, providing an actually funny TPCi TR line.
Not a bad idea to keep that instance of vanilla SM's trainer battle theme for the beginning of the race, I'll admit. The rest of the soundtrack is dub stuff, just the usual good stuff. No standouts.
This episode was fun enough, I guess. But compared to the next one that aired today, it's nothing, hence my minimal comments.
"Alola Kanto!"
Wow, what's with Ash's lack of excitement over going on the Kanto field trip?
"It's the original twerp, twerp, and twerpette trio!" Jessie says, providing another actually funny TPCi TR line. But I could've done without Misty saying "ready, steady," as that was one annoying JP catchphrase I was living happily without.
I never thought the dub was bad at any point in its history other than "The Legend of Thunder", but I must say Lisa Ortiz is the best person to have gained the position of voice director. As a result, Bill Rogers (who was average as Brock in DP) was excellent here. Even though he likely wasn't trying to, he sure captured Eric Stuart's spirit in his performance. Michele Knotz did her own good thing as Misty (this being only the third time she voiced Misty). As we all know, Tom Wayland wasn't fit for the job of VD. It's amazing to see how much things have gotten better since Lisa Ortiz became the VD.
Oh man is the dub music of this one great. I'm happy the M20 credits piano solo version of the first dub OP wasn't used in the flashback. Instead it's a new arrangement mainly on a flute. And in general, there was a lot of flutework in this episode. Ed Goldfarb did confirm in that M20 Q&A he did on Twitter that he uses a mixture of live instruments and digital ones. I wonder if the flute was a real one. Even Jigglypuff got a new theme on a harp.
Yeah, this episode felt like the field trip it was, unconnected vignettes and all.

Wondered why you didn't mention this, but then I remembered: The adults drinks were changed from orange to green as the former looks like beer.
But green is a strange colour to change it to, that implies they're drinking health juice, shakes or smoothies. Who the hell drinks that at a barbeque?
And speaking of which, TPCI must've been glad they don't dub the Poké Problem segment when they saw the drunk Joy and Jenny one in episode 39.

"When Regions Collide!"
Michele Knotz modified her performance as Misty a bit, because she doesn't sound too much like she did in the previous episode. Bill Rogers stayed the same, though, and he still sounded great. Honestly, if I were watching this at a younger age, I'd never know Eric Stuart was replaced.
As this is the season finale, this'll be the last time the laid-back greatness that is "Under the Alolan Sun" will be heard. Gotta say, I'll miss it. As for the rest of the soundtrack, it's great as usual. Important episodes like this tend to get the most meticulous musical attention. The only misstep was them keeping whatever theme that was when Sophocles and Lillie's battle against Brock started. Another one of those "mountain out of a hill" (no, not a molehill, because this situation was a bit too serious to be called a mere molehill; still, the point stands) Mima-isms. But other than that, the music (both the dub-exclusive music and the kept JP stuff (and I never thought I'd accept a use of an XY battle theme)) was great.
Battle, battle, battle. That's all this episode was, and it was a lot of fun. A great way to end the season. Now the wait for season 21 begins.
So how was the season in general? Well, I think we all know what its Japanese self drove me to, particularly its 21st episode (damn that one to Hell), but its dubbed self kept up the tradition of fixing the show to the point where it's an enjoyable Saturday morning cartoon. The acting from everyone but Lana, the writing apart from just a few gaffes and Samson Oak's awful puns (even though they're meant to be awful), and the music basically everywhere were all great this season. Now on the show's own merits, there were some boring episodes (the Oranguru one being the lowest point of the season if you ask me), lots of fun episodes, and some very heartfelt ones ("One Journey Ends, Another Begins..." being the highest point of this season if you ask me). Oh, and the animation's amazing. Just thought I'd say that, too. I don't know why it's being seen as a huge problem.

It'll be out on December 23rd. It seems to be USA-only, which is the one drawback, but the fact that there's an official release of TPCi music is staggering.

When I saw it there was audible, confused scoffing, but nothing too offensive. Also, that DVD cover is funny to me, because i just picked up a Eeveelution figure set that featured Eevee, the Gen I evolutions, and... Pikachu. It's a Tomy set that references Alola, so they could have slapped Sylveon in there if they only had one spot left. |

"I Choose You" is out in the USA on DVD and Blu-Ray. However, it's currently online-only from all major retailers. I guess the in-store release will be later.

Funny as I checked my local Best- Buy and they had it in store for $24.99. BTW, didn't buy it because currently I lack funds and will have til next week cuz there's a certain PS4 game I want to get now.
