877: Chōsen Pokemon Sukai Rirē! Tobe, Onbatto!!
870: A Relay in the Sky!
We start with Hawlucha still attempting to teach Ash's new son Noibat how to fly, and he seems to get the gliding part down, managing to stay airborne. Ash then tells Noibat to flaps it's wings, which goes pretty disastrously, until Fletchinder, who knows a thing or two more about flying helps it out.
A sudden gust of wind tries to knock Noibat out of the sky, because everything's out to kill it, but Hawlucha manages to teach it how to glide on the wind and land without dying. Noibat is so happy/sad/baby that it cries once landing until Ash calms it down.
Suddenly out of nowhere a Starly, Staravia and Staraptor fly by appearing to have...
It appears that not to far away from where they were training, some sort of Flying-type Pokémon race seems to be starting, according to a man who sounds suspiciously like Dr. Eggman it's a Pokémon Sky Relay.
The twerps slowly introduce themselves to Eggman, who in turn introduces himself as "Ornithal", along with his Noctowl.
Eggma... sorry, "Ornithal" explains that the Pokémon Sky Relay is a flying competition between teams of three Flying Pokémon each. We also get a look at Orson, the previous year's winner who's looking for a repeat.
"Ornithal" asks Ash if the three Flying Pokémon standing in front of him are his and gives a look that freaks Noibat the fuck out. He then asks Ash to join the Sky Relay, to fulfill HIS dream of taking first place, he must know Ash has a knack for entering competitions he's never heard of before and beating the participants who've spent their lives training for them.
Ash tells Noibat that this would be perfect training for which is kind of backwards, since Noibat can barely fly and a flying competition should be so far out of it's bailiwick.
Team Rocket even agrees with me that Ash's plan is super dumb, but Meowth figures that the race may sharpen Noibat's abilities up. This gives Jesse an idea, they'll enter the competition, too and - hoping it'll evolve mid race, I guess - they'll grab it.
James then brings up the giant flaw in this plan, they only have two Pokémon capable of Flight, but Jesse has that covered too with Team Rocket's scientific equipment.
Eggnithal gives the twerps the lowdown on how the race works, the starting Pokémon flies with a sash being flanked by the trainer given direction from a balloon, the second Pokémon receives the sash at the edge of a forest and flies around a cliff, passing the sash off the the anchor with the finish line at the start of the course.
Ash sets the team positions, Fletchinder is first, followed by Hawlucha with Noibat going last.
Serena decides to ask if Ornithal has ever competed in the Sky Relay, to which he replies that he hasn't, and you want to know why he hasn't?
Well, do ya?
Well, the answer is that he could never catch a full team of Three Flying Pokémon, not in all his years of existence, so he's living out his dreams vicariously through some kid he never met before.
The next day, everyone's set at their positions, and ready to have their dreams dashed by Ash the dream smasher.
The countdown starts... AND THEY'RE OFF!
Fletchinder, despite never once even a little training for this event is already in the lead. The Pokémon then head into the forest, flying straight through the trees, which seems dangerous, but whatever.
Everything's going fine until finally a Hydreigon just decides "fuck it" and flies straight through the trees until it flies into a tree way larger than it and knocks itself out. Apparently the Hydreigon hit so hard that it managed to knock every tree's Appl... ugh, Berries free creating a falling hazard. Orson commands Staravia to drop it's speed while another trainer orders his Altaria to take the lead, which is does with ease.
As Altaria reaches the checkpoint suddenly Team Rocket have Pumpkaboo pull out of it's... um, wings(?) which somehow manages to incapacitate Altaria, and somehow doesn't get Team Rocket disqualified on the spot. James calls their strategy flawless, even though they had no clue Altaria was going to close in on first.
The announcer claims that "somehow" Pumpkaboo was able to take the lead, even though there's goddamn video cameras showing the race from multiple angles, and the trainers themselves are right behind the action, but whatever, next up for Team Rocket it's Pelipper, and no, you didn't read that wrong, Team Rocket's second Pokémon is Pelipper... or should I say, Meowth in a rather shoddily constructed Pelipper-shaped flying contraption.
Staravia hands it's sash off to Staraptor, and Hawlucha gets it's sash. The other teams of nameless and soulless contestants apparently all selfdestructed, as these three are the only teams we follow from here on out.
Jesse is curious if they actually have a chance to win, and James assures he they will, and just then Meowth turns up the turbo, which is a rocket coming from Pelipper's ass. Orson, staring directly at "Pelipper" seems to think he has a bad case of fart gas or something, and apparently everyone else has been rended blind and dumb.
Staraptor can't close the gap, and Hawlucha "glides" in front of him, by using the rocks, because apparently the writers remembered that Hawlucha can't morphologically fly but only glide.
Hawlucha then catches up to "Pelipper" catching Team Rocket by complete surprise, so James gives the order to block Hawlucha, which essentially translates to fight as dirty as possible.
Meowth then slams into Hawlucha and Serena wonders if it's legal, though considering Team Rocket blatantly cheated to get first place I say their aren't many rules at play here.
Meowth then goes for a final blow however, Hawlucha dodges it and Meowth smacks right into a rock, breaking the faulty metal on the side of the aircraft.
After the rest of the metal falls off, Ash in one of his dumber moods asks "Pelipper? What's going on?"
"Prepare for trouble you twerps! HOORAY!"
"Make mine a double, and you will pay!"
Before they can get any further, they crash into Meowth and explode and go blasting off, which the giant video trons catch from a surprisingly great angle.
Somehow Team Rocket then change trajectory and fly past the next checkpoint before changing trajectory again and blasting off again... for real this time.
Hawlucha then lands and hands off the sash and takes off, followed immediately by Staravia and Starly.
The PA Announcer informs everyone that "Team R" was disqualified for violating the competitions very fast-and-loose rules.
Starly closes in on Noibat and suddenly the wind current completely changes, and the barely aerial baby Pokémon who's never trained a day in it's life for a flying competition gets caught up and almost eats it, as Starly successfully blows through the wind (blows through, see what I did there?)
Noibat remembers the encouragement it got from Ash and Hawlucha and manages to glide through the current as well, and even catches up neck and neck with Starly.
And they race to a photo finish, and the winner is...
STARLY!
Starly the Pokémon who actually trained for this competition and didn't just roll through with it's dumb father/trainer wins the Relay.
The twerps congratulate Noibat, as they should as it and Ash's whole team should have had been nowhere near this close to winning.
Orson is the winner but no one cares because Noibat can now fly. Maybe next time they'll win, I guess we'll have to wait for next time as the journey is...
