874: Raibaru Batoru San hon Shōbu! Ashita ni Mukatte!!
868: Rivals: Today and Tomorrow!
Last time, Ash won the Fairy Badge, putting his grand total to six. Well, it seems like he has his badge situation under control, now all he has to worry about are...
Speaking of which, we get a glimpse of the notes Sawyer has been keeping, and they're all lines and squiggles! Anyway, while going over said notes, he forgets temporarily how to walk, and trips and drops his notebook, and runs off without it.
While they run off, who should show up but Team Rocket. They don't know what the hell the notebook is, but they figure they might as well steal it, for it could be valuable, which seems like a terrible reason to steal this thing, but whatevs.
While thumbing through, they stumble across a picture of Steven Stone, the champion of Hoenn, who they've totally met before, and assume this to be his notebook filled with secrets of how to become a Champion class trainer.
Meanwhile the Twerps have settled down, and Serena offers the boys a taste of her Sweet Treats, and Sawyer clearly has the munchies for some of that.
Sawyer for some reason also thinks eating enough of Serena's Sweet Treats he'll become a better trainer like Ash, it's almost like something is clouding his mind. He gets up in Ash's face about it, and Ash shows a surprising awareness of his personal space, and looks creeped out that Sawyer's all up in his grill.
Ash tells him that it's totally the Pokémon who do all the heavy lifting, and a badge is proof that everyone worked hard. Sawyer goes to take a note and starts tweaking when he realizes the notebook is gone.
Well, as we clearly know, Team Rocket picked it up, and James is for some reason giving the other two an explanation of who Steven Stone is, even though they've already met him. In case you've forgot he's now the Champion, who owns a Metagross, and is also heir to Hoenn's largest company, the Devon Corporation.
Apparently, Team Rocket take the picture of him in the book to mean that he dropped the book himself, I don't know what kind of weirdo keeps a picture of themselves in a notebook, though. Either way, upon learning that he's assuredly filthy stinkin' rich, Jesse is all ready to tie him down with marriage.
Back on the bridge, the twerps look, but can't fin the notebook, obviously because Team Rocket has it, but that doesn't stop Ash and Clemont from sticking their asses in the air to search for it. Sawyer is super depressed, but Serena has an idea worthy of the Scooby-Doo Detective Agency - Let's split up!
Held cells of the twerps and their Pokémon look for the notebook, but to no avail. Sawyer reveals that all the important stuff he's learned since Hoeen is written in the book, including his signed picture of Steven Stone, who - as his name suggests - has been doing his own research on Mega Stones, even revealing that Treecko can Mega Evolve once it becomes a Sceptile.
Well, this is usually the time for Clemontic gear to go on, as Bonnie helpfully points out, but there's no trail to follow, so for once Clemont doesn't have an invention for this situation, but then Sawyer has got it, he'll use his Slurpuff to help find... wait a minute, he has a Fairy-type, but two episodes ago he acted like he never seen one before, and doesn't know it's Type Advantages and Disadvantages? Sawyer really is a shitty trainer.
While the Cotton Candy Puppy now tracks the scent, James is super giddy over the information he's read, including the fact that Sceptile can Mega Evolve, which gets Jesse's attention, despite their drought of Sceptile.
Suddenly, COTTON CANDY PUPPY! (^_^)
It then uses it's tongue, as if it were some sort of tongue-based Pokémon, and runs off with it, and returns it to it's rightful owner.
That said, Team Rocket aren't too happy to see the Twerps, and (from their POV) aren't happy to see them stealing the Champion's Notebook from them.
Also, that's right, Sawyer has never met Team Rocket, so Serena give him the "Bad Guys who steal other people's Pokémon" line.
Anyway, Team Rocket insists that it's Steven's because it's signed by him, himself. Until Sawyer reveals that it's just an autograph.
This leaves them a bit rancorous, so they send in Pumpkaboo, and Inkay to attack to satiate their anger, but before anything of consequence happens, they're sent blasting off again.
Welp.
Now Sawyer has his notebook back, and it's time to hear a familiar, horrible voice. It's Pierre, he announces that the next Showcase will be in Dendemille Town, which is close to Anistar City.
While she's at it, she asks Ash when's his next Gym battle, and Ash is like "fuck if I know", so Serena informs him the best place will be Anistar City, which has a sundial, and just happens to be close to Dedemille Town. The twerps are also ready to unload Sawyer and ask where he's headed to, and he's going to challenge Ramos and the Coumarine Gym, but before he leaves forever he has a favor to ask, he wants to finish that battle from earlier.
It's a three-on-three, sort of, as Sawyer starts with Bagon against none other than Pikachu. Ash and Pikachu start the battle with Quick Attack, and Bagon heads in with Headbutt, but gets knocked back. It's tries to counter with Drgon Breath, but it gets neutralized by Pikachu's Thunderbolt. Pikachu then launches into an Iron Tail from above that catches both Sawyer and Bagon by surprise. In the heat of the moment Sawyer calls for a Dragon Claw. They lash in the air, but poor Bagon is no match for mighty Pikachu.
And Bagon is down and unable to battle.
Up next is the Slurpuff that Sawyer doesn't know the Type advantages of, and Ash tags in the One-Time Champ, and future Hall of Famer, Hawlucha. Sawyer seems to know that Electric-type moves are strong against Flying-types and opts for an Electro Ball... that Hawlucha dodges, while nailing Cotton Candy Puppy with a Karate Chop.
Sawyer's a bit shook, and tries to check his notes, during which Ash has Hawlucha finish the round with a Flying Press., making Slurpuff Sit and Stay, and he doesn't even give the poor adorable pup a treat. You monster, Ash!
Ash gives Sawyer advice that when a Pokémon gets hit, the trainer has to stay alert, and not hesitate, for the Pokémon will also hesitate.
Sawyer seems to get this and tries to remember what he learned from Ash's Gym Battle, and use it in this last battle, that he technically lost since he's down 1-3.
Ash sends in Frogadier, against Sawyer's last Pokémon Treecko, who catches him off guard when he uses the Flying-type move, Aerial Ace.
Sawyer returns the attack with Bullet Seed, which is Super effective, and thus catches Frogadier slight off guard, though he manages to avoid most of them. Sawyer counters with Agility, but runs head first into a Water Pulse.
Sawyer checks if Treecko can still go on, but then suddenly he starts glowing and everyone's like "woah, that was awesome".
According to Ash Grovyle evolved because he could sense Sawyer's passion, and he also learned a new move, Leaf Blade.
The battle continues, and Frogadier uses Double Team to lose Grovyle, leaving it in position to use Aerial Ace on it from behind. Grovyle swings it's Leaf Blade wildy, as Frogadier barely avoids it, before recovering and running at it with Cut. They reset and Frogadier is running circles around Grovyle... um, literally. Literal circles it's running.
Sawyer then commands Grovyle to jump, and once he reaches his apex, he shoots a Bullet Seed, that Frogadier cancels with Water Pulse. Grovyle then uses Leaf Blade through the cloud of resulting smoke and lands and hits... and hits... NOTHING!
Frogadier's back on top and uses another Water Pulse from above and smacks Grovyle in the face with it, point blank. Grovyle stands a little, before giving out and falling.
Sawyer checks out Grovyle and after it comes too, it gives a look that says "yeah, this ain't over motherfucker," Sawyer then thanks Ash and tells Serena he'll be cheering her in her next showcase. They wish each other luck, and head off on their journeys, and until they meet again the journey is...
