872: Fasshonshō de Batoru desu! Tatsubei VS Shushupu!!
866: A Fashionable Battle!
The twerps have arrived at another city - Laverre City - surely another distraction city that exists only to distract Ash from getting to his next gym batt...
Wait, Laverre City? THE Laverre City?
Already? I'm not used to this.
Oh my, I'm not the only one excited here either, Serena is super into it as well, apparently the Laverre City Gym leader, Valerie... who by the way, is a hideous polymerization of human and Bug-type Pokémon, possibly some failed prototype experiment from the same lab that created the Jennies and Joys in a benign attempt to create a Super Officer Jenny (and/or Joy), is a fashion designer AND the Gym Leader, and since Girls and the French love fashion, and Serena who is both a Girl and French, wants to meet her, and Ash wants to beat her. Seems he's gearing up for...
They walk right on up to the Laverre Gym, and it looks like nothing's stopping Ash from having his battle today, Ash is going to fight for his Sixth badge, and that's that.
Serena's excited for that, but eh, she just really wants to go to her shop which is conveniently located inside the Gym. So yeah, they're really skipping the bullshit and getting right to the battle.
They get into the gym, and a bunch of ladies wearing vague interpretations of Japanese Yukata are running around arranging shit. But Ash doesn't care about that, he looks over to the help desk to see some trainer bugging the secretary for a Gym Battle himself... but there's no battles today, so the gym can set up it's fashion thing.
Yep, Ash gets denied. You didn't think it was going to be that easy, did you?
Bonnie meanwhile hits on another girl in the name of Clemont, and they get into a argument, despite being super high the trainer notices Clemont and remembers him from the Lumiose City Gym, as he is the leader.
You may have forgotten that fact over the course of several episodes.
He introduces himself as Sawyer, and the twerps introduce themselves to him, so far he only has one badge. Holy Shit kid, one badge? That's super weak.
He doesn't say which badge, but does say he wants to get stronger and go back and challenge the Lumiose Gym, at this moment Sawyer has a slight moment of clarity and realizes that Clemont is here, and not at the gym, to which he informs him he left it in the hands of his robot.
Clemont explains that he's following Ash so he can gain valuable experience by watching Ash battle, which, wow, sounds really weird when it's said aloud.
Bonnie freaks the druggie out by telling him that Ash has FIVE WHOLE BADGES. To which his response is that he'll be the very best and catch up to Ash.
Well, either way, Ash has to wait until tomorrow for his next badge, so what shall they do? Well, Parisian Native Serena has an idea, they'll go to Valerie's store, with the money that Serena doesn't have.
Speaking of which, remember the last time Serena went shopping for a bunch of clothes, and yet she still wears the same ones she previously wore? Though, I guess Aria did all the shopping that time.
Anyway, to get back on track, at what I guess is meant to represent the store, Serena and Bonnie stand in front of an Espeon colored swatch of fabric, and calls it an "outfit" for some reason.
While the girls look at clothes, the men sit on the bench completely uninterested in what the women are doing. So uninterested in fact that Ash, like a husband sitting on the sidelines at a mall watching his woman spend all their money on clothes that he'll have to lug around, insists on having a battle instead so he doesn't kill himself from the boredom.
While the men leave the women to their thing, the women are being stared at from the distance by people they don't know, two of the Yuakata girls.
The Stranger Danger Alert is at level 1!
Outside on the battlefield Ash and Sawyer have decided to have a double battle and Ash starts with Frogadier and Hawlucha, while Sawyer uses his two Pokémon, Treeko and Bagon.
He scans them both with his Pokédex, which is weird, since he already had a Treeko, but then again, this one is decidedly less Clint Eastwood-y, so maybe he didn't recognize it, and it tells him that Bagon is the "Rock Head Pokémon", which will become important in a few seconds.
The battle starts and Sawyer immediately starts with Headbutt, and Ash counters with a Karate Chop to it's rock head. It hurts Hawlucha's poor hand, and Ash has the brilliant and not at all insane idea to have Hawlucha do a bunch of Karate Chops to Bagon's head.
Bagon backs up a little from the hits, and Ash reveals his strategy, NEVER GIVE UP! Which makes him and Hawlucha, John Cena.
Sawyer sees, even though you can't see John Cena, and has Treeko do a Leech Seed. It misses as Hawlucha jumps in the air (remember, he can't fly) as Bagon counters with Fire Fang. Before it can hit, Ash remembers Frogadier is sitting - RIGHT THERE and has him Water Pulse the Fire Fang away.
But before we continue with the battle, let's see what the girls are up to...
In the entire space of the battle, they haven't moved from the Umbreon fabric swatch, because Serena is busy fantasizing about how awesome it'd look on her. She asks her man what he thinks, but as usual he's emotionally vacant because he'd rather battle than do things with his woman.
Serena concedes and decides that they should go and watch their battle as the two strangers from earlier creep up on the two little girls and ask to "talk" for a minute.
Stranger Danger levels have reached 10!
But before we can watch Serena and Bonnie get horribly murdered by strangers, it's back to Ash's battle, Treeko uses Bullet Seed on Frogadier, who dodges by backflipping before it can reach him.
That doesn't work, so Sawyer has Treeko use Bullet Seed again, and Ash tells Frogadier simply to "get in there", which I guess means enough to Frogadier that he knows to run and jump high in the air to avoid the seed.
Sawyer, who knows a thing or two about being high, spots him and has Treeko shoot it's Bullet Seed into the air, Frogadier then uses Cut like a goddamn Jedi, and knocks all the seeds out of it's way, until it blows up Treeko (Just go with it) and knocks it out.
Clemont then informs Sawyer that that's how Ash battles, he don't give two shits about Type-Advantages, pissing fanboys the hell off in the process.
Sawyer takes these notes down, and Ash asks what he wants to do now? Well, Sawyer still has Bagon, so he wants to continue battling... but before they can techno music starts playing.
It reminds me a lot of that Mortal Kombat theme, and Clemont openly wonders what's going on, despite being told previously what was going on.
In her room, Valerie sits surrounded by her Pokémon, Sylveon, Spritzee, Mr. Mime and Mawille. They Pokémon babble their names at her to cheer her up, and in a surprise twist, she babbles their names back. I guess she really is a horrific conglomeration of Human and Bug-type Pokémon. The strange women bring Bonnie and Serena to see the hideous conglomeration of mad science gone wrong (or right? I don't know, it is mad science).
Serena can't believe what she's seeing (that's what I'm saying), she's super excited to see Valerie (oh, woops) and one of the girls tells Valerie that she was thinking of asking these two, and Valerie says they should be perfect.
Perfect for what? Well, turns out that before she can answer Bonnie wants her to "take care" of Clemont, because of how pretty she is, and it would be a great match because Clemont loves Weird Science.
Valerie continues to show off and speaks to Dedenne, and then she finally tells the girls what she wants. She has a favour to ask.
Stranger danger levels have maxed out, and the police have been dispatched!
Despite the runway and previously being told what was going on, Ash and Clemont still have no clue what's going on, because they're manly men what don't know nothing about this here girly fashion what's its.
The stage lights up, and Ash and Clemont are still super confused (Ash has rubbed off on Clemont).
Two women stand on the top of the stage, and explain that they're beginning the presentation of Valerie's latest collection.
The Gerbil that runs the Hamster Wheel that keeps the light on in Ash's brain still don't get it, and he asks a nearby girl what they're presenting.
The designs are admittedly very pretty Azumaril patterned mini-dress Yukata combo, followed by an Espurr, Gothitelle, and Chimecho ones.
Clemont in all his infinite wisdom thinks they should tell the girls, about this event that they already knew about.
But next are designs based on Florges and Chingling, and who should be wearing them but Serena and Bonnie, and Serena looks extremely freaked out.
Of note, there's are the only ones not accompanied by the Pokémon they're meant to be inspired by.
The boys are surprised to see the girls on stage, and Sawyer's poor fried brain now thinks that Serena is a model, and is super jealous that Ash not only travels with a Gym Leader, but also gets to bang a model on the side.
Serena admits however that the actual models couldn't make it, and apparently of all the girls in the entire area, by such a huge stroke of luck, they were chosen to take their place.
Valerie then comes out and thanks the crowd for coming to her fashion show. She then explains that her philosophy is that true beauty can only come from nature, and that the clothes are meant to look their best during battle.
Welp, Valerie's said the magic word, and now Ash actually gives a shit, and one of Valerie's assistants (the one who had to turn down Sawyer earlier) spots Sawyer and tells Valerie about him. She only says "the boy in the front", so luckily Valerie picks the right one.
So if Sawyer can beat Valerie here he gets a Gym Badge, thus making an impromptu Gym Battle, though since this was already a part of the show, the woman probably could have mentioned this earlier to Sawyer and set him up for it behind the scenes, instead of turning him down, then springing this on him last second, but I guess it makes for more spontaneity.
Well, the rules are set, and Sawyer is ready, he sends forth Bagon and Valerie sends in Spritzee. "Spritzee, the Perfume Pokémon. Spritzee gives off a fragrance that delights anyone who smells it, which changes depending on what Spritzee eats ", Ash remembers it from that time he saw the when he first landed in Kalos, but doesn't really know anything about it.
Clemont ominously announces that this could be very bad, as Sawyer starts off with a Dragon Breath. The dust clears, and Spritzee's didn't feel a thing.
Clemont drops the bomb, Spritzee is a Fairy-type, and Dragon-type moves have absolutely no effect on Fairy-types.
Now, I know Ash is new to the area, but shouldn't Sawyer know that? Is he literally finding all this out as he goes?
With this Brand New information that no one else knew until just this moment, Sawyer decides that he'll keep Bagon out and instead go for a Headbutt, and Spritzee flies out of the way of every single one, without Valerie even telling it to DODGE!
Valerie decides to stop humiliating Sawyer, and sends in Spritzee with a new move called Dazzling Gleam, as Sawyer tries for another Headbutt.
Dazzling Gleam not only looks pretty but it knocks out Bagon in one hit. And Sawyer loses, because despite the earlier claim that it'd be Gym rules, it was apparently only 1-on-1. This was surprisingly never mentioned, as that's pretty important.
Valerie then thanks him, and he thanks her and she leaves as Ash glares at his next challenge bathed in purple lighting.
Ash, scarfs down his food super hard while Sawyer excitedly recounts his battle. Why? Because it's time for some Special Trainin'.
Sawyer wants to join in, and Serena sadly tells him that, goddamn it, you could take your time to eat. Serena, Bonnie and then Clemont decide to swallow their food as fast as possible to sit on the sidelines and watch, their poor dimwitted friend, to make sure he doesn't wander off or something and get lost, before he can have his battle as the journey is...
